The Michigan Daily - Thursday, March 12, 1992- Page 7 Vermont flood causes shutdowns MONTPJLIER, Vt. (AP) - Ice jams diverted a rushing river through the downtown of Vermont's capital ci0y yesterday, shutting down state ,overnment and closing schools with wiier 5 to 6 feet deep in places. j.'This is a very serious situa- tiotr," said Gov. Howard Dean, who declared an emergency and called out the National Guard to help res- cu' people after the water rose rapidly during the morning. Dean made his comment while watching a kayaker paddle in front f the Statehouse. * Canoes and rowboats also took to flooded streets, as civilians and Guardsmen rescued people from dbwntown buildings and from atop cars caught when the water rose rapidly. "It was like the flood gates pened. It got bad fast," said fire- fighter Gordon Bock. } No injuries were reported. Doctor with AIDS speaks on HIV discrimination by Sarah McCarthy Dr. Pat Walsh told a group of more than 50 students last night about the night he lost his virginity. "I was a second-year medical student and I thought there was no way it could happen to me," he said. "We had a one-night stand and went our separate ways." In a speech sponsored by Future Physicians for Social Responsibility, Walsh discussed the ways that AIDS affects the medical community and how his attitude toward the medical profession changed after going from doctor to patient. "It was a rude awakening to go from being a physician to being a pa- tient," Walsh said. "I realized how evasive and humiliating it was to be a patient." As a physician who practiced medicine with the HIV-virus and a patient with AIDS, Walsh discussed discrimination against physicians and patients who are infected with the virus. "The problem they get into here is that if they're not going to let HIV-positive health care providers practice medicine, then your going to have to let (them) refuse to treat people who are HIV-positive be- cause they are putting themselves at risk," Walsh said. "It's become such a political issue that people aren't really looking at it realistically." Walsh confronted the emotional ramifications of the disease as a doc- 'it was a rude awakening to go from being a physician to being a patient.' - Dr. Pat Walsh tor within the medical community and pleaded students to get tested for the virus. "All of you - particularly if you want to be a physician - should get tested just to experience what that process is like to be on the other end of the system," Walsh said. "Then imagine being tested by your boss." As an AIDS activist, Walsh dis- cussed how the virus has affected not only his outlook on medicine, but how he now values life. "I realized when I got tested that I was living my life for -four years down the road. I was positive that when I reached that goal I would be happy," Walsh said. "When I tested positive, all of that was taken away, and I realized all I have, all any of us really have, is today." Walsh contracted the virus in 1982 - shortly after AIDS was first diagnosed in the United States - from his first homosexual experience. "I think it's our responsibility as leaders of society, and whether you believe it or not, as college students you are leaders of society, is to look at your own prejudice and your own hang-ups and deal with those first and then start to educate others." Students who attended Walsh's speech said they were struck by his honest approach to AIDS issues. "As a speaker, he painted a very true picture," LSA junior Allen Hakimi said. "It shook me up and some parts made me uncomfortable, but it opened my eyes." LSA senior Saima Khan, who or- ganized Walsh's visit for the group, said, "He said everything pre-med students wanted to hear. It helped show how much people need to be educated. Now maybe next week we can act."
