The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, March 11,1992- Page 7 Macomb prosecutor Marlenga addresses national, state issues by Sarah Fette Macomb County Prosecutor Carl Marlenga, a possible Democratic nominee for the Michigan governor's race in 1994, spoke about important national and state issues to the College Democrats last night in the Henderson room of the Michigan League. In his speech, "How Democrats Can Win the White House in 1992 and the Governor's Mansion in 1994," Marlenga commented on the present state of the Democratic party. "Twenty-two years ago, the Democratic Party was where the action was. It was the party to be in," Marlenga said. "Then over the years, it stopped being the party of ideas or ideals. As I listen to the Republicans now, I'm beginning to believe that they are the ones who are bankrupt - the ones without ideas." In addressing national campaign issues, Marlenga cited fair and free trade, national health care, and the environment as the topics he sees as being of foremost importance to the party. "We now live in a more grown- up country. We are one nation-state in a world of nation-states. But it is OK to stand up for ourselves and demand that other nations drop their unfair trade barriers," he said. Stressing the importance of na- tional health care to the Democratic campaign he claimed, "With 38 million Americans totally unin- sured, national health care is and should be an important issue in terms of quality of life." It is the environment, however, i that Marlenga claimed could be "the issue that the Democratic Party can use to bring itself back into the light." At the state level, Marlenga deemed Governor Engler's cuts in general assistance "one of the greater cruelties the current admin- istration in Lansing has brought to us." He additionally called for the state's support for the arts. Asserting that low property taxes alone are not enough to attract businesses to Michigan, Marlenga argued that other quality of life is- sues, such as the strength of local arts, play a part in, drawing people to the state. Following his speech, Marlenga opened the floor for questions. During this time, he addressed questions on such issues as abor- tion, the rising cost of higher edu- cation, and minority and women's rights. by Karen Pier Daily Graduate Schools Reporter UAW member Bob Myers told a meeting of Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) last night that the last two Republican administra- tions, the United States Congress and union officials are causing the death of the middle class. Myers, who is running for presi- dent of the UAW 1776 local at Willow Run, talked about the prob- lems facing fellow workers at his plant. . "Where do you go? I'm 47 years old," said Myers, a 25-year veteran of the Willow Run plant. GM re- cently announced that the plant will be closed by the Summer of 1993. Although GM has promised to retrain workers, this may not help some of them, Myers said. "How do you retrain somebody who cannot read and write? Or can read and write at a sixth-grade level?" Foreign competition is one reason why American workers face layoffs, Myers said. "We have a problem: Mexican free trade. It will destroy the manufacturing base of our coun- try. Mexican workers get 83 cents an hour... I can't live on that and neither can you," he said. Another problem facing workers is the conflict of choosing whether to accept a job or join the union. According to Myers, workers are caught in a cycle which leads to ever-increasing concessions: to se- cure their jobs, workers vote for concessions. When the international UAW won't accept these conces- sions, workers leave the union to save their jobs. GM could ask workers to make concessions in plants around the country, forcing workers to leave their union, thus continuing the cycle. UAW member tells GEO why middle class is dying "When they 're done exploiting the workers, Mexico will look aw- fully good," Myers said. Myers added that there will be dire aftershocks from the plant's closing. There will be an increase of crime, drug abuse and violence,, Myers predicted. "We have not yet begun to see the affects of (the closing) of Willow Run," he said. "We figured presenting a current,. pressing labor issue would be of in- terest to our membership," said GEO organizer Phillis Englebert. "He provided an analysis of why the Willow Run plant is closing." In other business, GEO members mentioned present grievances, in- cluding a lack of sufficient office space for TA's in the School of Music. "I think his stance fantastic," said LSA Miller. on the arts is senior Dana CLASSIFIED ADS HELP WANTED "AMBER LAKE/TYLER HILL CAMPS 3 top New York area resident camps.
