The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, March 10, 1992- Page 7 HARKIN Continued from page 1 through the Michigan Primary," he said. "My heart was in the the Harkin campaign." LSA sophomore Jean Shapiro, another Harkin supporter, said she does not think Harkin was ever a factor in the race. "Even if his whole following supported another candidate, I don't think it would make much difference," she said. Business School graduate student Rob Davis said he is unsure whether Harkin's withdrawal will affect the remainder of the campaign. Davis said Harkin's followers could affect the race if they are asked to write him in or support an- other candidate. Davis added he was not affected by Harkin's withdrawal because he supports President Bush, who he said is "the lesser of six evils." LSA senior Dana Miller, College Democrats president, said Harkin's announcement will affect the race - especially in Ann Arbor. She said there is talk that Harkin supporters will now turn to Clinton or Brown. Miller, whose personal favorite was Harkin, said she is now unde- cided, but is considering supporting Clinton or Brown. "We'll see who's still in the race," she said. Other students such as ) Engineering junior Stewart Katz said PRIMARIES Continued from page 1 Michigan aimed directly at the la- bor vote. "Let's rebuild our manufactur- ing base, build a high-tech base, plan a transition from a defense to a domestic economy, and organize our people to compete and win again," he said. Clinton campaign spokesperson Carter Wilkie said Clinton would campaign aggressively in Michigan. "We're going to be out there even harder, going after working people and middle-class families that may have been leaning toward a Harkin candidacy," he said. "I think if people take a close look, they'll be the most interested in Governor Clinton's message." Tsongas aides said they were preparing fresh television commer- cials criticizing Clinton's record as governor of Arkansas; Clinton was ready with a reminder to voters that Tsongas opposes legislation that would ban the hiring of permanent replacement workers in cases of strikes. Clinton, the favorite in primaries in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Tennessee and cau- cases in Missouri, headed for, Kissimmee, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa on the final rounds of his Super Tuesday campaign. He sought to depict Tsongas as the stronger of the two men in Florida, saying his rival "has had a big advantage in this race" because he has targeted Florida. Clinton said, "I've got the best program for conversion from the defense to the domestic side. ... I've got by far a better program for tourism, I've got a better program for senior citizens, a much better program for control of health-care costs." Tsongas said the choice was be- tween "whether you grow the econ- omy or whether you give out tax breaks." The main dispute centered on Social Security. Clinton was running a television commercial saying Tsongas favored a cut in cost-of-living adjustments for the elderly. Brown took aim at the political establishment in general and Clin- ton in particular. "Rhode Island is a perfect ex- ample of what politics is doing to people right in their pocket," he said in a reference to a scandal in the state's banking system. they had not heard of Harkin's deci- sion to pull out of the race. Katz said he will support Clinton. "He's the one I hate the least," he said. Engineering junior Peter Arnold asked, "Who's Harkin, the health- care guy?" Although Arnold said he "Bush has ignored public opinion is a Republican, he would like to see and he seems to have taken care of Clinton nominated for president. one class and forgotten the rest."
