The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, March 3, 1992- Page 7 ADAMS Continued from page 1 know," Gardner said. "But on speculation that he doesn't see that and others of us do, then I would talk with him by private phone be- fore making a public statement." Asked if he believed the allega- tions 'against Adams, Gardner replied, "I'm not going to make any judgment." Adams dropped his bid for a sec- ond term Sunday, hours after The Seattle Times published accounts from unidentified former employees *and associates. One woman said Adams drugged and raped her. Adams told reporters: "I have a job to do and I'm not resigning this office." Tom Keefe, his legal aide, said the senator was standing firm. Adams was transportation secre- tary in the Carter administration and earlier spent 12 years in the U.S. House representing Seattle. Previous allegations of sexual misconduct made him one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the Senate. Former U.S. Rep. Mike Lowry and state Sen. Patty Murray, both Democrats, were already running against Adams, citing his low standing in polls. "I think people are getting a full dose of sex in the workplace and abuse of power," Murray said yes- terday. "There is a different feeling of power among the old boys' network." State Democratic Chairperson Karen Marchioro said his resignation "has to be considered now." The al- legations make "a very, very serious hit on a person who was not in that strong a position anyway," she said. In bowing out of the race Sunday, Adams called it "the saddest day in my life" and denied hurting anyone. He didn't explicitly deny the allegations. WILLOW RUN Continued from page 1 largest recruiters here. (Their recruit- ing) is a fraction of what they have done here three or four years ago," he said. "Students will go where the jobs are," Peterson said. "Those who di- rect themselves to the auto industry are not very many." Judith Harper, assistant director of the Office of Financial Aid, said there will be a greater demand for financial aid from Willow Run area students. "Any time there is a threat of jobs being lost, families get very concerned about their children's ed- ucation," Harper said. Undergraduate admissions direc- tor Don Swain said, "These kinds of things have a ripple effect in any community." The University draws students from the Willow Run area and the closing will reduce the pool of in- coming students, Swain said. The workers who will lose their jobs will turn to Washtenaw Community College for vocational or trade training rather than applying at the University, Swain said. Dan Grimes, research associate in the Institute of Labor and come support that the workers will receive in the new contract. There will be a greater effect if the workers get no support, Grimes said. State Rep. Perry Bullard (D-Ann Arbor) said there are currently 400,000-500,000 long term unem- 'Any time there is a threat of jobs being lost, families get very concerned about their children's education.' - Judith Harper assistant director, Office of Financial Aid Shelter Association of Ann Arbor, said she expects an increase in the homeless population after many of those who will lose their jobs de- plete their savings. "It's hard to predict what the ef- fect will be, what the economy will be in 1993, or if the benefits cut by Engler will be restored," Summerfield said. State Rep. Kirk Profit (D- Ypsilanti) said, "There will be a ter- rific impact if it really does close. We're going to work for the next year and a half to keep that thing open."~ Profit said a community coalition is concentrating on five areas: eco- nomic development to keep produc- tion at Willow Run, creation of new public policy to encourage manufac- turing, job training, public assis- tance, and the indirect effect on em- ployment. "I think the state will have to turn itself around.... We have to develop an industrial policy which will be competitive worldwide," Profit said. Industrial Relations, said, "The real impact won't be until late 1993. "The potential (effect) is two- way. One is the budget effect on the state.... Another way is if the chil- dren of employees of Willow Run decrease in the likeliness that they will enroll (at the University)," Grimes said. The impact depends on the in- ployed people in Michigan. "This is bound to put greater pressure on funding for higher education," Bullard said. "The citizens of Michigan and other industrialized states are going to pay dearly for failure to have an effective industrial policy," Bullard added.
