Once again, the Michigan hockey
team came out flat against a lower-
division opponent. Last night at the
OSU Ice Rink, the Wolverines bat-
tled back from a 2-0 deficit to beat
last-place Ohio State, 3-2. Michigan
*overcame its lackluster start with
spectacular individual efforts and a
little bit of luck. This is a sight that
has become all too common for the
No. 3 team in the nation.
"We don't like

needs to up its intensity to matchup
with teams like Lake Superior and
Michigan State, who the Wolverines
play this weekend.
The final six games of the season
as well as the CCHA playoffs will
be especially important for
Michigan. The Wolverines and
Lakers are battling for one of the
top-two seeds in the Western re-
gional of the NCAA tournament.
Minnesota seems to be a lock for
one of those seeds, which comes
with a first-round bye in the tourna-
ment.
One mishap, like what almost oc-
curred in Columbus last night, could
cost the Wolverines that bye, and
may force them to play the first two
rounds in Providence.

'M' breaks Buckeyes, 3-2

Say what you will about the
Michigan hockey team. Say the
Wolverines sometimes lack motiva-
tion, or say they're not playing up to
expectations.
But make sure you say one thing
in particular, they're in first place.
Senior and Hobey Baker candi-
date Denny Felsner's line played a
major hand in rescuing the
Wolverines (17-6-3 in the CCHA,
23-6-3 overall) from an embarrass-
ing defeat by scoring the final two
goals in a wild and wooly 3-2 tri-
umph over the Buckeyes (4-17-5, 8-
17-5) at OSU Ice Rink.
The victory elevates Michigan
into a tie for first place in the CCHA
with Lake Superior St.
"We've never felt it before,"
Felsner said of the first-place experi-
ence. "So it feels good. I'm really
proud of the team."
At 15:58 in third period, after
right wing David Oliver fed Felsner,
the senior skated through the slot

drawing out OSU goaltender Mike
Bales.
"He (Bales) came out, I saw
Wiseman cutting to the net, and just
slid it to him," Felsner said.
The Wolverines then survived the
remaining 4:02, including the final
35 harrowing seconds, which was
played in the Michigan zone.
In the closing seconds, Michigan
goaltender Steve Shields turned
away several good chances including
a Rob Schriner blast from the point.
The comeback was necessitated
by a Buckeye onslaught in the first
1:04 of play. Bryan Riedel flipped
the puck from the bottom of the right
circle over a prone Shields for
OSU's second score.
After defenseman Aaron Ward
checked Mike Merriman into
Shields, the Buckeye wing was very
reluctant to get up.
"The guy cross checked me and
my helmet popped off," Shields de-
scribed.
Down 2-0, the Wolverines came
out of the locker room breathing fire.
Most of the period was played in the
Ohio State zone, and Michigan be-

gan to respond to the Buckeye's
rough and tumble tactics.
Fittingly, two of the Wolverines
biggest hitters, rookies Rick Willis
and Mike Kmuble, collaborated to
halve the 2-0 lead. Kmuble knocked
a rebound off of a Willis shot in the
crease past Bales.
"I just pulled up, and took a cou-
ple of swings at it, " Kmuble said.
"Somehow it got through."
Asethe second period neared con-
clusion, Felsner made his strike.
After Buckeye center Dave Smith
was carded off for decking David
Harlock, the play moved to a draw at
center ice.
Both Wiseman and Felsner rec-
ognized the Buckeye's poor defense
of the senior, and Wiseman flipped
the draw perfectly to a rushing
Felsner.
After picking the puck up at the
blue line, Felsner skated alone on
Bales, faking him right and sliding a
backhander past him for the equal-
izer.
The goal tied Felsner with former
Bowling Green star Jamie
Wansbrough for the all time lead in
goals scored by a CCHA player.

M' stickers head to Arizona

While many Michigan students
heading to sun-soaked vacation spots
for Spring Break are looking to
frolic in the warm weather, the
men's lacrosse team has other plans.
The Wolverines head out to
Arizona this Friday for a week-long
survival test, complete with strenu-
ous workouts and tough games.
Michigan begins the grueling trip
against the University of California
at Santa Barbara (UCSB). The
Wolverines will match up against
the Gauchos at Arizona State
University Sunday in Tempe.
Wednesday, Michigan will face
Arizona State. The team then treks
down to Tucson to meet Arizona on
Thursday. Michigan is expecting its
toughest game from the Wildcats.

Lacrosse Club in their final match
Saturday.
Arizona and UCSB are the
strongest squads Michigan will face
this early in the season, and
Michigan coach Bob DiGiovanni
said he feels his squad will use the
games to their advantage.
"Both UCSB and Arizona won
their respective divisions in the
Western Collegiate Lacrosse League
last year and they'll give us some
good competition," DiGiovanni said.
"We'll need that in order to get
prepared for our spring season."
While the Spring season begins
over break, it gets into full swing
Saturday, March 7 against Michigan
State. Michigan will be gunning for
MSU not only because they are

traditional rivals, but also because
State is a varsity team, and the match
will be the last between the two
schools unless Michigan attains
varsity status.
This year was the first in many
seasons that Michigan had cuts, and
the team is only carrying 33 players,
where in recent years they carried
more than 50.
Only 25 lacrosse players will be
making the trip to Arizona.
"We're not taking four of our
better players and that will hurt us
particularly when we are on man-up
(the other team has someone in the
penalty box) because (the absent
Wolverines) are very good and we
like to use them when we're in that
situation," DiGiovanni said.
