Pittsburgh 4 SPARTANS continued from page 1 middle of a three-game homestand that could make or break the Wolverines' Big Ten season. Michigan's success could hinge on its defensive effort, especially trying to shut down Spartan guard Shawn Respert. The Wolverine de- fense has improved in the second half of the conference season, hold- ing Iowa to just 39 percent from the floor. But in the previous matchup, MSU shot almost 52 percent. Res- pert killed Michigan with his perimeter shooting, recording a game-high 26 points. "We cannot let (Respert) get an open jump shot," Michigan coach Steve Fisher said. "We better pay attention to him." If the Michigan coaching staff decides to start five frosh as they have in the last two contests, the re- sponsibility of guarding Respert will fall on the shoulders of Jimmy King. King has come on strong of- fensively of late, scoring in double figures in the past two games. But his defensive prowess will be tested by Respert. But most of Saturday's matchup will take place inside the paint. Michigan's Webber and center Juwan Howard have dominated the post in recent games while the guards have done a better job feeding in the ball. The higher intensity of the Wolverines' inside defense has spurred fast-break opportunities. Michigan's running game could prove detrimental to the Spartans. "We just ran out of gas against Iowa, against Michigan (the first time around)," Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote said. "In all those games, they were uptempo games. We have a couple of big play- ers that seem to get fatigued in the latter stages of the game." Fatigued inside players may prove to be a problem for both squads. Michigan backup center Eric Riley sat out the last two games af- ter hurting his knee against North- western. His absence has forced other inside players to pick up the slack. Riley is scheduled to return for Saturday's game, but his playing time could be limited. Michigan State faces the same@ difficulties with starting forward Matt Steigenga, who has suffered from a persistent ankle problem.
