Page 10-The Michigan Daily- Thursday, February 13, 1992 BIG TENS Continued from page 8 a major force in the 100-meter back- stroke. Senior Katherine Creighton has had a great season and will likely be a top contender in the freestyle events. Michigan also possesses two- time all-American diver Lisa Crib- ari, who should rank highly at the Championships. The Michigan coaching staff is expecting that she will dive with the consistency she has shown all year. In preparation for the Big Ten Championships, the Wolverines have been focusing on fine tuning their strokes, as well as working on their speed. "At the end of the season you try to work on the little things, Richardson said. "But right now it comes down to the individual. If they have prepared themselves both mentally and physically the best as they can, they will swim that way." Today's events will include the individual medley relay, the 500 and 50-meter freestyle and the 200-me- ter individual medley. The eight swimmers with the best times from each event will advance to the finals this evening. Eight consolation swimmers are also eligible to com- pete. Competition will continue through Saturday and Sunday. It's a long weekend for the Michigan swimmers and they'are experiencing a wide spectrum of emotions. "They are all feeling very ex- cited, but also very tense," Richard- son said. "This is the kind of situa- tion where you want to remain as focused as possible." Men runners rested and ready by Bruce Inosencio Daily Sports Writer Arriving on the heels of Iowa's top political runner, Tom Harkin, the men's indoor track team heads to the corn belt this weekend for the Central Collegiate Championships held in Iowa City, Iowa. And while Michigan coach Jack Harvey is not promising a track and field of dreams, he is confident the Wolver- ines will be in contention. "What we're trying to do at the Central Collegiate is get in there somewhere in the top three," Har- vey said. "Eastern Michigan will definitely be the favored team basi- cally because of their sheer strength in the shorter distances," Besides Eastern Michigan, the other squads running Friday and Saturday include Iowa, Purdue, Western Michigan, Northern Iowa and Notre Dame. While Harvey is not looking past this weekend, there is still the notion of keeping everyone strong for the Big Ten championships two weeks down the road. After sitting out last weekend's meet, Dan Oden will be back to rep- resent Michigan in the mile and pos- sibly the 3,000-meters. Teammates Tony Carna and Jim Finlayson were also given a break from the Spartan Relays, but both will return to compete in the 5,000 and maybe the distance medley relay. Also absent from competition last weekend was pole vaulter Brad Darr. Darr was down in Blooming- ton, Ind., last weekend in a meet where he cleared 17 feet. After fac- ing some difficulties in recent weeks, Darr's latest success puts him in good standing for this week- end's competition. Darr is hoping to get back to early season form where he cleared 17'4". Darr and high jumper Dan Red- dan have the potential to claim big points for the Wolverines, and Har- vey is counting on their efforts, as he has done all season. Athletes that cannot be relied on for points in Iowa City are sprinters Mike Eccleston and Desmond Howard. While Eccleston is experi- encing back troubles and probably will not be in action until the Big Ten meet in East Lansing at the end of February, Howard has yet to run in a meet. "Desmond has just been so busy getting everything together with banquets and meetings that it's tough to get him ready to go," Har- vey said. "At this point he's not in shape for track and I really doubt if he'll even compete in the indoor sea- son." v '9 r V 91 I I(plus tax) One Heart-Shaped Pizza 9 91 with cheese, one topping and two servings of Pepsi®.
