The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, February 12, 1992- Page 7 Program allows students to create majors 16%f f"E.r"Me- CwE.nrnr I Dy %;uuris .acnerer Zzzzz LSA senior John Valencia takes a quick nap before his class in the MLB basement. When LSA senior Dean Tsai de- cided to study neurobiology, he had a small problem - his major didn't exist. But Tsai managed to pursue this area by creating a major through the Individual Concentration Program (ICP). Located in Angell Hall, the ICP enables students to create a special- ized concentration that the Univer- sity does not offer. A few concen- trations that are not offered include urban studies, neuroscience, crimi- nology and international relations. The ICP is not a Bachelor of General Studies or a double major - it requires students to create a program within the LSA curricu- lum, and all basic LSA requirements still must be met. ICP counselor Lina Wallin said students must focus on a specific goal and a unifying theme when re- searching their concentration. After the research has been com- pleted, Wallin said, an ICP commit- tee extensively reviews students' proposals to determine if the pro- gram is too similar to an existing concentration in LSA. Wallin said the concentrations are intended to fulfill the necessary background for the students to con- tinue in their specific field of study. Eric Lai is an ICP senior seeking a degree in philosophical literature. Whereas the philosophy major dealt more with conventional philosophies, he said, he wanted to concentrate on analytical philoso- phy with a focus on ethics, episte- mology and existentialism. But now he said he is planning to apply to law school and is concerned about the validity of an ICP degree. "It is hard to deal with explain- ing what the major is in terms of law unless you have strong recom- mendations. You must make them believe that your ICP is valid and worthy," Lai said. "You definitely have to be ag- gressive in terms of being your own counselor in terms of the major you want. You have to be committed to the subject area and feel strongly about the proposal." ICP urban development senior Jack Bransfield said he thinks the program should be transformed into a department. Bransfield said he is preparing to continue to graduate school in archi- tecture. He said he hoped the back- ground in urban development could secure a broader base of knowledge than thewarchitecture school taught. Bransfield said he thinks the program offers little counseling support, and left him feeling "that I hadn't gotten a solid body of knowledge - really scatter-shot and difficult." But he offered some advice for people planing to enter ICP. "It is necessary they make sure there is no other way they could have done the plan in any established concentration," he said. "If taking the program, then the counselors should be more explicit in stating the pros and cons on the plan. In my case they said 'it's very interest- ing"' and later accepted it.
