Another NCAA study showed that the effects of Proposition 48, enacted in 1986 establishing the present standards, did not decrease the number of Blacks in athletics and their graduation rate went up from 1984-1988. Michigan athletic director Jack Weidenbach supported the legisla- tion and figures it will have little impact in the Big Ten since the con- ference has already established stan- dards at the level. The number of core curriculum courses a recruit will need also in- creased from 11 to 13. New regulations for the en- rolled student-athlete also passed yesterday. More than 75 percent of each student-athlete's credit hours have to come from the regular aca- demic year. The Michigan contin- gent supported the proposal even though the University's spring and summer terms comprise 33 percent of the academic year. "We need to also remember that the purpose of the convention was not only for education, but also for cost containment. If they get it in the fall and winter semester, than there isn't any need to go in the spring and summer," Michigan as- sociate athletic director Peggy Bradley-Doppes said. The representatives also tight- ened up some of last year's legisla- tion, most notably, better defining the football coaching staff. Last year's amendment cut the staff to one head coach, eight assis- tant coaches and four restricted- earnings coaches. That was altered yesterday to have one head coach, nine assistants coaches and two graduate assistant coaches. ADVENTURE Continued from page 11 Does Michigan really need to reevaluate its program? Yes, the Wolverines need to do a little more to win a national championship. The national title is certainly a realistic goal of a team this good. But it should be understood that only one team can win a national championship - at least in most years. The polls' split decisions the last two seasons bring up another point. The national championship is subjective, unlike winning the Big Ten Championship. The Wolverines have won the Big Ten four straight years. There is no disputing that out of the hundreds of college programs in the country, Michigan has been in the top 10 for years. Obviously, the Wolverines are doing something right. It has been suggested recently that Michigan recruit faster players. This theory is based on the fact that the Wolverines' two losses this season came to Washington and Florida State - two of the nation's quickest teams. But speed doesn't guarantee victory. Washington proved it was simply more talented than Michigan. And the Seminoles' speed ended up losing to both Miami and Florida. "You can throw the speed out there, but that isn't the complete an- swer," Moeller said, "We're not a terribly slow team. We're not the slowest team in the world. In fact, we were probably slower last year than we are this year." For proof of how fast Michigan is, one can point to Howard or tailback Tyrone Wheatley. And as far as Grbac goes, yes, he played horribly in the Rose Bowl, but so did the offensive line, which allowed six sacks. Overall, this has been a great year for Grbac, who led the nation in passing efficiency. In order for Grbac to lose his starting position next season, someone will have to beat him out convincingly. Michigan is one of the best teams in the country and still will be next fall. The Wolverines don't need to start over with a whole new gameplan, they only need to build on what they have. _ _ i 0p 0 WHAT'S HAPPENING RECREATIONAL SPORTS Intramural Sports Program WANTED SPORTS OFFICIALS Experience Not Necessary.
