The Michigan Daily- Thursday, January 9, 1992 - Page 7 Quayle campaign unaffected by sudden Bush collapse NASHUA, N.H. (AP),- Vice President Dan Quayle began a bus tour of recession-battered New Hampshire yesterday--saying the administration has "got the message" of discontent over the economy. Quayle brushed aside a question on whether Bush's collapse from the stomach flu in Tokyo had raised new questions about his own qualifications. He said, "I'm ready," referring to his capacity to assume office if necessary. The president's illness focused new attention once more on Quayle's capability for stepping into the role of chief executive. A recent Gallup poll shows that 54 percent of those questioned said that Quayle is not qualified to be president, compared to 40 percent in August 1988. Quayle, beginning the Bush re- election drive in earnest in the lead- off primary state, embarked on a two-day tour of 13 communities in a bus dubbed "Victory 2." Asked about the challenge to the president from conservative primary election. commentator Patrick Buchanan, Along with a field of Quayle said: "I don't think anyone Democratic candidates, Buchanan has honestly believes that Pat Buchanan been campaigning around the state 'I don't think anyone honestly believes that Pat Buchanan is going to be the Republican presidential nominee.' - Dan Quayle . Vice President not necessarily for Buchanan, because of the economy," said Sen. Warren Rudman (R-N.H.), who is traveling with the vice president on the tour of plants, shops and villages. Criticizing Buchanan's "America First" slogan, Quayle said: "Don't send us a message of protectionism and isolationism." Quayle told reporters he was reading the Washington Post in the vice presidential residence in Washington when he got the word that Bush had collapsed at a state dinner in Tokyo. He said he talked to both Barbara Bush and the president's physician, Burton Lee, and they assured him that the president's bout with the stomach ailment was not serious. "Foreign trips are difficult," Quayle said. "A different time zone each time." Speaking with reporters in late afternoon, Quayle said the issue of assuming command "didn't even cross my mind. I knew he was on the way to the residence, not the hospital." is going to be the Republican presidential nominee." Buchanan is the president's only serious challenger in the Feb. 18 with sharp attacks on Bush administration economic policies. "Obviously a lot of people are going to vote against the president, CLAS SIFTED ADS HELP WANTED CRISIS COUNSELORS- Help out in the hard times ahead as a volunteer counselor at S.O.S.
