The Michigan Daily- Monday, February 3, 1992 - Page 7 134 Turks die In avalanches ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Blizzards and snow- blocked roads hampered searches yesterday for scores of people feared buried under snowslides in the rugged southeast Kurdish region. Gov. Necati Cetinkaya, the state-appointed chief administrator for the region, said at least 134 people had died, many of them soldiers. Rescuers, airlifted by U.S. military helicopters, were digging through the snow. 'At 7. a.m. everyone was shoveling snow from the oof of their houses. Suddenly there was a loud boom like an artillery gun going off and we saw a whole mountain moving upon us," recalled Ali Ergen of Gormec, a village 190 miles east of Diyarbakir and in Sirnak province bordering Iraq. He had to be rescued from snow up to his neck, he told the Anatolia news agency. Villagers carried victims in makeshift stretchers and shoveled snow and rubble to reach possible survivors. Thousands of villages were cut off in eastern and southeastern Turkey. In many places, the snow piled up to 10 feet high. A private Turkish TV station had said officials estimated the number of dead at 322. Freezing weather meant it was unlikely that many of those trapped in the avalanches could survive much longer. Snow was as high as five feet in some places, said meteorologists predicting more snow today. Power line pylons weighted down with snow ,toppled down, plunging much of the area into darkness, television reported. New V.P. moves into dorm today by Purvi Shah Daily Administration Reporter At a reception on her behalf Fri- day, Vice President of Student Af- fairs Maureen Hartford was inun- dated by warnings - including keeping shoes and bathrobe nearby in case of false fire alarms - to help her combat the dangers of living in South Quadrangle Residence Hall. Beginning today, Hartford will reside in South Quad for a week, in- dulging in the atmosphere and meals, and - more importantly - getting acquainted with students. "It's going to give me a chance to meet all kinds of students ... I don't know if there's anything average about Michigan students," Hartford said. Student Alumni Council (SAC) member Randall Lehrer said Hart- ford's plan to stay in South Quad demonstrates a commitment to interaction with students. "We warned her about fire alarms already," said SAC represen- tative Stacy Davis. "We were like, have you been forewarned? You can't get much more in the center of action than there." More than 65 students attended the open reception held Friday in order for Hartford to meet stu- dents. Another reception will be held on North Campus Feb. 13. Hartford commented that she en- joyed the cross-section of students she met. "This has been a wonderful student group," she said. "I've had a wonderful welcome from the stu- dents of Michigan. I hope I can live up to their expectations." Environmental Issues Commis- sion chair Nena Shaw said that the reception provided an opportunity for students-at-large to meet with administrators, who she argued tend to meet only with student leaders. that he attended the reception to be- come more involved with students and University activities. "I was hoping to meet more of the University community. We don't have many of these types of things," he said. "They happen too infrequently." However, Public Interest Re- search Group of Michigan 'We warned her about fire alarms already. We were like, have you been forewarned? Circus Elephant on rampage PALM BAY, Fla. (AP) - Police Officer Blayne Doyle was working security at the Great American Circus on Saturday when Kelly, an 8,000-pound Indian elephant, grabbed him with her trunk and tried to stomp on him. "I thought I was dead," Doyle said. Enact member Michael Dorsey said he liked the open nature of the reception, but was wary about its results. "It acts as a pacifier of stu- dent unrest ... I mean how many times has Duderstadt done this'?"lhe asked. "I wonder how much actual input that they take and act on. I think it's nil, but I could be wrong." Facility, Planning, and Design staff member Dennis Appel said (PIRGIM) at U of M member Dan Rabinovitch argued that the recep- tion seemed to be a frivolous use of money. "I am incensed that they don't have money to open a new sec- tion of Computer Science 181," he said. The reception was sponsored by Michigan Union Board of Represen- tatives, Residence Hall Assembly, SAC, and University Activities Center.
