The Michigan Daily- Tuesday, January 28, 1992 - Page i New group aids students of divorced, separated parents 4 by Shelly Oudsema University undergraduate women hav- ing problems coping with their parents' divorce or separation have a new counsel- ing resource. The organizers of "Adjusting to Recent Parental Separation or Divorce" - the ti- tle of the therapy program run by the Uni- versity Psychological Clinic - said they have found that many middle-aged parents believe college students are too immersed in their own lives to be upset by their par- ents' divorce. But clinic therapists said college stu- dents may react in many different ways. While some students may be relieved by their parents' divorce, others may feel hurt, confused or grief-stricken. Group organizers added that although the overall national divorce rate has de- clined in recent years, the divorce rate for couples age 40-65, many of whom have col- lege-age children, has increased by 50 percent. Nancy Freilicher, a Ph.D. candidate in clinical psychology and an advanced psy- chotherapy intern at the clinic, said she has found that students adjust easier when both parents want the divorce. However, if the divorce is one-sided, students may feel torn to support the injured party, she said. Group organizers said they wanted to limit the group to women to provide a comfortable atmosphere for open discus- sion. "We are limiting the group to women at this time because we think that students may feel more comfortable discussing some of the issues in a single-sex group," Freilicher said. Male and co-ed groups may be possible in the future as the program expands, Freilicher said. Both Freilicher and co-organizer Marci Gittleman, Ph.D. candidate in clinical psy- chology andadvanced psychotherapy intern at the Clinic said they are prepared to dis- cuss many different topics including issues concerning intimate sexuality, but plan to rely on the group to lead the discussion. "The discussions will enable students to identify with other students experienc- ing similar situations. A student whose parents have divorced six months ago is in a different position than a student whose parents have divorced a year ago," Freilicher said. "We hope students will learn different methods of coping from each other," she added. "The psychological trauma of divorce can often affect a student's schoolwork and social life. The discussions are meant to help students re-focus," Freilicher said. Members of the group are required to pledge strict confidentiality outside of the clinic. Each winner received a monetary award ranging from $200 to $350. The money was established by University alumnus Avery Hopwood as a bequest in his will. Judges, who were chosen from the University staff, reviewed the works of 79 students. However, the recipients said the money was not the only benefit of winning the competition. "It was a very big surprise when I re- ceived the letter," LSA sophomore Michael Kania said, who won $250 for po- etry. "There is a lot of gratification in knowing that someone thought my work was good." RC sophomore Rudy Fischmann said winning the Hopwood Award is a tremen- dous confidence booster. He added that af- ter receiving the award, he said he realized that, "maybe I do have some talent." Hopwood Award winners were not the only prize recipients. Ten University students won in other literary competi- tions, sharing a total of $4,500 in prize money. RC sophomore John Parker said that he was very surprised to receive the Roy Cowden Memorial Fellowship. He said he was even more surprized to discover Ihat out of seven winners, he is one of two undergraduates. "I didn't know I was competing against graduate students," he said. "To tell the truth, I don't know if I would have entered if I had known." i x+ t' y ... .
