"This will be a tuneup for our swimmers for the Olympic Trials which will be held in Indianapolis on March 1." The Wolverines have been im- pressive this year. Michigan enters the dual meet (3-0 in the Big Ten, 8- 0 overall). However, the Wolver- ines have yet to face a team with the overall talent which Stanford pos- sesses. Urbanchek feels that going into the meet, Stanford appears very strong, but beatable. "They have the depth advantage on paper," Urbanchek said. "How- ever, we are pretty evenly matched from event to event. Time is insignificant in this meet. Actually -----. . . . . . . .i......h. laer . behi n OicSta. e whchwa rn~ed:o.:. :: . il winning each event is very sig- nificant." Michigan has won its last four dual meets against Stanford, win- ning last year 132-111. "In the past, we have been very lucky against Stanford winning by a small margin each time," Ur- banchek said. Individually for Michigan, Ur- banchek is anticipating strong per- formances from butterflyer Brian Gunn who will be competing in three individual events. "I am also looking for Rodney Van Tassell and Steve West to do well in their specialties," Ur- banchek said. Stanford's top individual per- former entering the meet is Brian Retterer, U.S. and NCAA record holder in the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Junior Steve Bigelow goes head to head against the Stan- ford sophomore in the 200. Wolverine rookie Gustavo Borges, who has been impressive in the early part of the season, will face Retterer in the 50 freestyle. Borges, the 1991 Pan American Champion, set a season best of 20.54 last week. Today at 7 p.m., the teams will have a non-scoring dual meet with some of the younger swimmers competing. Tomorrow at 5 p.m., the main event begins. Former Michigan star Ron Johnson heads the list. Johnson, originally from Detroit, played halfback for the Wolverines from 1966-68. While in Ann Arbor he set numerous marks, and racked up many honors. He captained Michigan during his senior season, 1968, and also earned Big Ten MVP honors. In addition, he was the Wolverines' team MVP in 1967 and 1968. Johnson also garnered the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor for Scholarship and Athletics. During his final Michigan season, 6-foot-1 former halfback set a Wolverine record with 19 rushing touchdowns, eclipsing Tom Harmon's mark set in 1940. Also during his senior year, he tied a Big Ten record with five rushing scores in Michigan's 34-9 vic- tory over Wisconsin, Nov. 16, 1968. In that same game against the Badgers, Johnson, set a Wolverine record with 347 yards rushing. His 139.1 average rushing yards per game during 1968 remained a Michigan record until Jamie Morris averaged 141.9 yards in 1987. And Johnson's 1557 com- bined rushing/receiving yards in 1968 also stayed as a Wolverine record until Morris shattered it with 1825 yards in 1987. Following his Michigan career, Johnson went on to play five years in the NFL with the New York Giants where he became one of their leading career ground gainers. Following his football career, Johnson became a business executive, and he presently owns a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in New Jersey.
