Voskuil takes European vacation

by Chris Carr
Daily Sports Writer
Michigan forward James
Voskuil was not expecting too
much out of his summer. After
spending the previous summer nurs-
ing an injured foot and rebuilding a
jeep during his spare time, Voskuil
was just looking for the chance to
play a lot of basketball to get ready
for the upcoming season. He got
that chance along with an added
bonus: two weeks in Europe.
Voskuil, a junior from Grand
V Rapids who led the Wolverines in
three-point field goal percentage
last season (44.7 percent), was the
Michigan representative on a Big
Ten All-Star team which toured
Sweden and Finland, playing against
club teams for two weeks in Au-
gust.
"When (Michigan coach Steve)
Fisher asked me if I wanted to play
on the team, I accepted the invita-
tion right away" Voskuil said. "It
was an opportunity to play on an
All-Star team and see Europe for
free. How could you pass that up?"
The team was coached by Wis-
consin coach Steve Yoder and fin-
ished 7-2. Voskuil started three of
the nine games and averaged 6.7
points per game. He led the team
with 19 points in a 120-95 victory
over KTP-Kotka, a club team from
Finland.
"I played pretty well, but the
level of play was nothing compared
to the Big Ten," Voskuil said. "The
biggest difference was the officiat-
ing. Everything was being called,
which was a lot different from the
Big Ten. Sometimes they would ini-
tiate the contact, but it seemed that
every call went against us."
While the trip provided Voskuil
with the opportunity to work on his
game and do some sightseeing, it
also gave him the chance to strike
friendships with various Big Ten

Pierce (Purdue).
"The best part of the trip was
meeting all of the guys and being
able to have a good time," Voskuil
said. "We spent a lot of time talk-
ing about the different tactics our
coaches use. It was interesting to

hear Scott Pierce's story about how
Gene Keady made them practice for
an hour and a half after a loss."
