Last Saturday, the Wolverines suffered their first shutout loss in over three years. The Broncos have been stifled by Michigan 13 consec- utive times in a streak that dates to 1988-89 season and includes 5-1 and 5-3 victories this year. Although the Wolverines have two victories over WMU, Michigan coach Red Berenson is not under-es- timating the Broncos. "It was a battle last time we played Western and I'm sure it will be again," Berenson said. "We need to win these games. We can't make an earthquake about what happened against Lake Superior. It's just a matter of raising our level of play to what it has been." Curiously enough, the last time Western Michigan had to face Michigan was after its only other winless weekend this season. The re- sults did not please Bronco coach Bill Wilkinson. "(The situation) is similar to what happened the weekend they lost to Michigan State," Wilkinson said. "I am not real pleased with what transpired up there." Aside from the embarrassment of the shutout, Michigan also faces the expectation of winning the CCHA as well as final exams this week. These factors all challenge the mental readiness all the players. "I don't know what going to happen this weekend," Hobey Baker Award candidate Denny Felsner said. "But we're worried about them like everyone else, everyone wants to beat us." Senior Bronco defenseman Andy Suhy targeted the Wolverines after the second loss to them. "We're going to be on those guys.... We're going to go out there and get them," Suhy said. "We're going to win - I guarantee it." A guarantee may be a bit much considering the two teams recent history. However, Wilkinson feels his team may be ready. "I think we played pretty con- sistently from start to finish al- most every game," he said. There were 20 and 13 power plays for Michigan and WMU respectively. And while neither team did particularly well when they played each other - WMU (2 for 13), UM (3 for 20) - they are ranked second and third in power play goals among CCHA teams, 25.8 percent to 21.2 percent. The teams also boast the conference leaders in PPGs. Bronco Colin Ward and Wolverine David Oliver each have seven. Ward and his line- mates, conference scoring leaders Keith Jones (8-16) and Pat Fer- schweiler (2-10) are all on the CCHA leaderboard. They accounted for three of the four Bronco goals against the Wolverines this year. "Colin Ward is an individual who complements his linemates, Keith Jones and Pat Ferschweiler, well," Wilkinson said. "He's a good finisher, he gets garbage goals as well as the pretty ones." Michigan will have to battle the Broncos without one or perhaps two Wolverines. Center Mark Ouimet suffered a slight shoulder separa- tion and is questionable. Defense- man Aaron Ward will be in Kitch- ener, Ont., trying out for the Junior Canadian National Team. Berenson will adjust his lines by pairing Ron Sacka with Chris Tamer and leave the other defensive un- changed. With Ouimet questionable, the front lines are not settled, but Berenson was satisfied with the re- sults of having David Roberts cen- ter a line with Cam Stewart and Ted Kramer. After the Wolverines finish the WMU series, they will be off until Christmas night. The Christmas night skate is mandated because th Wolverines will play in the two day Great Lakes Invitational tourna- ment starting Friday, Dec. 27 at Joe Louis Arena. The four-team GLI will feature Michigan against Harvard and Michigan State against Michigan Tech in the first round. The losers will play a consolation game before the championship game at 7:30 p.m. between the winners. January 3 and 4, Wolverines return to CCHA competition against Ferris State for a two-game series at Yost Ice Arena.
