Page 12-The Michigan Daily- Wednesday, December 11, 1991 Main course on by David Schechter Daily Basketball Writer Hors d'oeuvre hour is ending. The Michigan basketball team will begin working on its main course of games after tomorrow's contest against Eastern Michigan (sort of a weenie in a blanket type team) is over. "The games that we're supposed to win end on Thursday, and then we play teams that are good," coach Steve Fisher said. The holiday schedule for Steve Fisher's Wolverines is considerably more difficult than their games to date where Michigan's average mar- gin of victory has been more than 31 points. The next four games are at home, in order of date; Michigan faces Eastern Michigan tomorrow night at 7:30, Duke on Saturday at 3:45, Central Michigan on Dec. 16, and Rice on Dec. 21. Dec. 28, the Wolverines will be the showcase team in the Red Lob- ster Classic in Orlando, Florida. The tournament pits them against Brigham Young in the opening round and either Virginia Tech or Florida in the second. "Sure, we've got Duke on our minds," team captain Freddie Hunter said. "But we don't want to look past Eastern, because once you start overlooking games you can get in trouble." Iap for '~ Eastern Michigan, though pro- gressing all the way to a game against North Carolina in the "Sweet 16" round of last year's NCAA Tournament, is not the threat it was. The Eagles graduated five players including standouts Charles and Carl Thomas -and Marcus Kennedy. "Basically, Eastern is going to be our toughest game to date.... Coach (Ben) Braun does such a good job. The challenge is probably going to be keeping the guys focused on East- ern," assistant coach Perry Watson said. It sure can be hard to focus when the NCAA National Champions are breathing down your back. The Duke Michigan guard Michael Talley receives another pass en route to the basket against Cleveland State. He and his teammates look to extend their three-game winning streak over Christmas break. - -- . " ." . . . ---.-;-. . a .... .f.L . . . .. -- ..... . " . . .i- ". " NO .: 'a.g'o$''. As far as experience, Watson, i4 many ways, is just as new to the col- lege game as this year's highly-' touted newcomers. "I've coached as; many big games as you can in high school, but this is probably my, biggest game thus far in my college, career." Watson said. "This will be a learning experi- ence for the guys to go up against. the Laitners, the Hurleys, the Grant Hills, the Thomas Hills," he added. Though it is the marquee game in, this still young season, Duke will; not provide the only challenge for this young squad. "We play legitimate contenders., Everyone knows that Duke is a cony tender, but Rice is a contender foir the Southwest conference. They'e a, very good basketball team, and could have very easily bea~citi Michigan State in the Maui CIas, sic," Fisher said. Following the Rice game thc players and coaches will get some time off to spend with their fam- lies, but then it's back to busine down South in Orlando. Well, nod all business. The Wolverines are scheduled i; spend a few extra days in Florida see the sites and to go to Disnc World. The Spurs, with form Wolverine Sean Higgins, will alb be in Orlando playing the Magi; The Michigan team could be in tN stands for that one. "We're gonna go down there arrd have some fun. But we're going down there to take care of business too," Watson said.
