All the King's men put it together
This Friday the six-member ensemble known as the King's Singers will
attempt to soothe the savage, exam-anticipating, paper-writing
beasts on campus with its unique vocal blend. Lauded the world over
for flawless technique and outstanding showmanship, this "Rolls
Royce of barbershop quartets" (according to Variety) sings every-
thing from Renaissance to rock (okay, okay, maybe pop). To this end,
the members of the ensemble always try to challenge themselves by
expanding into different avenues of a capella singing. The sextet origi-
nally hails from Cambridge, where its members started as Choral
Scholars at King's College and hence the name. Since the group's for-
mation in the mid-1960s, it has entertained to packed performance
centers, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. The Singers
will perform a seasonal program entitled A Winter Carnival.The pro-
gram is divided into six sections: Christmas Songs from Catalonia; AA
British Christmas; "Jack and the Beanstalk - A Yuppie Pantomine"
by Paul Draton; Chanukah - Festival of Lights; "King John's
Christmas" by Daryl Runswick; and Arrangements in Close Harmony
- Seasonal Selections from the Lighter Side of the Repertoire. The
show starts at 8 p.m. in Hill Auditorium. Tickets are $16 to $24.
