M ., The Michigan Daily Page 2 *OPENER Continued from page 1 The Eagles will rely on their de- fense to keep them in the game. Led by defensive tackles Mike Marinaro, John Stolberg and Ted Page, BC will pose problems for Michigan's running attack. Stolberg has a banged up leg, but Coughlin expects him to play. For Marinaro, this game will carry added importance since his younger brother, Joe, will be on the sideline for Michigan. Although the first-year Wolverine offensive' tackle is not expected to see action, Mike will have all the motivation he needs to lead his youthful team- mates. "They are a young defensive group," Skrepenak said. "We're go- ing to have to be mentally tough for all the alignments they will throw at us. It will be a good early test." Offensively, Boston College has only one weapon that should con- cern Michigan - tight end Mark Chmura. The senior, who should be a first-round pick in the NFL, racked up 560 yards receiving last year. The Eagles' lineup may contain 9 some sleeping giants. Sophomore quarterback Glenn Foley completed 9 of 29 passes for just 123 yards last Saturday.. Foley's numbers would have been higher if his receivers had gotten open. "Foley is a better passer than those figures," Michigan coach Gary Moeller said. "His receivers ap- peared to be bothered by Rutgers' bumping off the line. They never seemed to develop their passing routes." - Coughlin is well aware of the problem. "We haven't emerged with any strength at the receiver or running back positions," he said. "We don't have great depth, and our team speed is a problem.". On the other side of the ball, Michigan is ready to play. "It's tough, going against the same guys everyday, especially when they are your teammates," Michigan inside linebacker Erick Anderson said. "We can't wait for the season to get under way, and with the type 'We can't wait for the season to get under way, and with the type of talent we have, we should win handily' -Erick Anderson, 'M' inside Iinebacker of talent we have, we should win handily." Defensive end Mike Evans and cornerback Lance Dottin hope to have big games. Both are from the Boston area and have been waiting for the opportunity to play in front of family and friends. "I'm so excited," Dottin said.. "Every day I think about it, every single day." Women's golf tean hosts Invitational by Andy De Korte Daily Sports Writer Defending champions always put in a little extra effort to retain their title for another year. This Saturday at the University golf course, the Michigan women's golf team, winner of the Lady Wolverine Invitational last year, will be shooting with that extra vigor in its first tournament of the year. After a disappointing showing at the Big Ten Championships last June, the Wolverines are eager to re- turn to their winning ways. Michi- gan will face a nine-team field, composed largely of the same teams from a year ago, including Big Ten foe Purdue. Michigan's squad has a new look after losing Becky Hayes, Darcy Chandler, and Mary Hartman to graduation. Hayes, a consistent, low-scoring four-year golfer will be missed more this weekend be- cause she was the leading scorer in the invitational last year. However, Wolverine coach Sue LeClair is not worried about her team's chances since she does return a competitive core. "We can certainly win this tour- nament," LeClair said. "In fact, we are kind of counting on it." Aug. 26 marked the beginning of golfers fall season and after five qualifier rounds, LeClair has set her lineup for the invitational. She has also chosen the individual competi- tors. Last year's leading scorer Erica Zonder and fellow senior Kristin Beilstein will lead the Wolverines against the field. Both of thcm hz achieved 79s already this fall, si passing the perennial goal of However, LeClair anticipates mc from them as well as the other e perienced golfers, Tricia Good ai Wendy Bigler. "Because they have experien, and played most of last year, th were not really pushed in qualifyi rounds, so I think they will do b ter when playing for real," LeCk, said. "Although it is early, I a- pleased with what I have seen, an, think we will have a good start Saturday." Maura Hawkins and rookie Je nie Zimmerman complete the linci, in what will be their first starts fI Michigan. Because it is a home tournameni,. LeClair will enter more individi. als, allowing them to gain compet tive experience. Jenny Boring, Carr' , Nosenchuk, Tiffany McCorkel, air Tegan McCorkel will all be partie, ipating this weekend. Last year, the Wolverines starts. with high scores on their homy,, course, but made up for them in thc last two rounds. They will not hav. . an opportunity to do so this year K cause the golfers will only be pla) , ing 36 holes this weekend instead the normal 54. The high first-round scores b. came a problem that plagued Mich5 gan for most of the fall season.
