The Michigan Daily - Friday, December 6, 1991 - Page 15 Bowl Griddes Times sure are tough in this era of recession. The bearded fellow, who strongly resembles former Chargers quarterback and current CBS icon Dan Fouts, appears to be saying, "Get me 100 shares of Pan Am. And hand in my Griddes pick!" The bald guy on the right, who seems to be regretting his decision to get extra onions on his pastrami sandwich, is obviously pondering if he can use his Griddes certificate to pay for his electric bill. The 6:30 p.m. match was sched- uled at Lapeer to help further ex- pose collegiate volleyball and as a kick-off to the women's high school volleyball season in Michigan. "We're trying to get our spirits up," Wolverine co-captain Rico Latham said. "We've been seeing slow progress and we want to come out of this preseason on a high. We're trying to get ready for the season. We've all put in a hard pre- season. It's OSU's varsity. It's a pretty big deal." This will be the Wolverines' last match until after the break, resuming play during the first weekend of the Winter semester. The team is still hoping to answer some questions before the regular season begins. "I think we're getting better," junior Soren Juul said. "People are starting to get to know each other. It's difficult to play when you have to worry about your teammates hit- ting, setting, and blocking. But once things get clicking and you get to know your teammates then your side becomes automatic and the only variable is what the other side is go- ing to do." Playing against varsity competi- tion will give the Wolverines something to measure themselves against. "It'll be very difficult," junior Tony Poshek said. "A win would really boost our confidence." The Wolverines will be sending only eight players to the match while the rest of the team stays be- hind to work a fundraiser. Tomor- row is their annual co-rec tourna- ment at the CCRB starting at 9 a.m. The tournament consists of selected co-rec teams made up most- ly of alumni of collegiate volley- ball programs. The three divisions of competition have drawn 22 teams to this year's tournament. Tiebreaker: Michigan Name: Phone number: Washington *Holtz signs with Irish for five more yearsAre You Afrad Of The Dark SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Lou Holtz signed a five-year con- tract extension yesterday, abruptly eiiding speculation that the Notre Dame coach might leave for the ,MhMinnesota Vikings. "Holtz feared the continuous speculation would hurt recruiting, but he proved unable to squelch ru- mors that he might take the NFL jab. Holtz said repeatedly he in- tended to stay at Notre Dame, but talk flared anew when the Vikings announced Wednesday that Jerry Burns would retire and team pres- Gident Roger Headrick said he would approach Holtz about the job. "I've indicated at every opportu- nity my intention to remain at Notre Dame as long as the univer- sity wishes me to serve as football coach," Holtz said when the con- tact was announced. "I have no in- tention of coaching anywhere else." When asked about his future, 1Ioltz's tone of voice was unequivo- *chl, but he couched his replies in wa- *ring phrases such as "hope to," "want to" and "plan to." "I love Notre Dame," he said last month. "I want to finish out my coaching career here, whether that's a year, or two years or five years. I don't plan on coaching any place else." "The perception was anytime his name was mentioned, Lou was leav- ing," sports information director John Heisler said. "The fact that Lou didn't have a formal contract may have had something to do with the speculation. "This was going to happen today regardless," he said. "But realisti- cally the suggestion that continued to be made regarding Lou's future was frustrating. "This is a big recruiting weekend for us," Heisler said. This year, Holtz hopes to sign a top-rated quarterback to take over when junior Rick Mirer graduates. Holtz coached one year in the NFL, producing a 3-10 record with the New York Jets in 1976 and re- signing the week before the final regular season game. 11 I.
