Be a part of the first campus chamber orchestra ever, history in the making! On Bits of TV Me: Where do you find the bits from TV at the beginning of some of the songs? Mark: Find them off TV. Me: Do you tape little bits of TV with a tape recorder or something? Mark: I've been known to do that. On Steve Turner Going Back to College Me: Why did Steve go back to college? Mark: 'Cause he prefers it. Me: Is it the end of Mudhoney? Mark; I don't know. Me: Why? Mark: Because the future is uncertain and the end is al- ways near. How Mark Keeps his Vocal Chords in Shape Mark: I eat salt. Eat salt and drink lots of beer. It's really good for my high blood pressure too. Mudhoney's Groupies Me: Do you have groupies? Mark: If we do, I feel sorry for them Me: Why? Mark: Because we don't know that they exist. On Staying a College Band . Me: Do you want to stay at a certain level of success? Mark: It'd be stupid to not want to reach more people, but I'm not counting on it. I'm not expecting it to happen. Me: Why not? Mark: I just don't think we re easily served up on a platter. On Life Outside of Mudhoney Me: What do you do when you're not doing Mudhoney? Mark: Try to live a normal life. Me: Does it work? Are you recognized on the street? Mark: Yeah it's so horrible. I can't go anywhere. I dress up as a garbage can and walk down the sidewalk. Me: No little kids ask you for autographs? Mark: No, but dogs pee on me. --Annette Petruso , former" the Ark calendar claims, could do all those things and still perform her primarily folk-based CLASSIFIED ADS REALLY WORK Give 'em a t Save the LP! MUDSLIDE Continued from page 13 the Stax/Volt studios, you know, like Booker T. and the MG's proba- bly recorded with it and stuff. So we just figured that would be a lot better vibe than, say, something Heart had worked on. Booker doesn't seem like he and his friends would be an influence for a band that has never used any brass instruments on their records and are apparently anti-commercial. Me: What inspires you musi- cally? Mark: Punk rock. Sixties punk. Jazz. I mean... like Mingus and stuff. Some country stuff. Lots of country blues. Little bit of rocka- billy. No classical. Hardly any in- dustrial. Me: Madonna? Mark: Um, no. No, she's a nega- tive inspiration, I think. Me: Negative? Mark: I went and saw the movie (Truth or Dare) and I didn't like it at all. Me: You didn't think it was to- tally hilarious? Mark: No, I thought she was pa- thetic. Mudhoney - Arm at least - don't think that they have much to do with metal, a genre more success- ful than Madonna herself. When you try to find them in the mall record store, however, they're in the metal/hard rock section near Jane's Addiction. When I listen to Mudhoney, I play them loud for full effect. It's not like they're that much like punk. But most metal is on major labels and Mudhoney is still on Sub Pop, a large independent label. Their largest support is still the college circuit in the USA. Mark: I think the average head- banger has never even heard of us. Me: Would you like them to be fans at all? Mark: Do we have a choice?... No, we don't go out of our way. You know, if people like us, fine. If people are stupid and like us, that's kind of too bad. I don't dwell on it too much. It re- ally doesn't have a whole lot to do with me. Me: Aren't you related to them at all? Mark: Jeez, I don't know. I never thought so. Me: Is it selling out to go on a major label? Mark: Not necessarily. It's sell- ing out to bend over backwards to be on a major label. Me: Do you think Soundgarden and Nirvana (former labelmates who are now on A & M and DGC, respectively) did that? Mark: No, I think they're doing okay. You know if you can live with the music that you play and you make it on to a major label, then* you're doing fine. Me: Could you see yourself stay- ing on Sub Pop forever? Mark: I don't know. Nothing's forever, babe. MUDHONEY rags at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit on Saturday night with special guests Ann Arbor's Laughing Hyenas and Gas Hoffer.
