Two thousand and seventy-three students voting is a mandate for a radically different assembly," Ochoa said. "We have to realize that between 90 to 95 percent of the campus did not vote. It just means the conservatives turned out their people better than we did." But MSA President James Green disagreed, arguing it was an "honor" for CC to win a third consecutive election. He added that the results indicated an affirmation of the current assembly. "I would doubt that that has been achieved by any party in MSA," he said. "People in this country don't generally vote for good government. They vote against something. It's very diffi- cult for an incumbent party at the student government level to win." Yet there is a silver lining to the Progressive Party's apparent loss, Ochoa argued, since Progres- sive candidate Michael Oduro beat CC candidate Andrew Kanfer, who is currently Treasurer and Budget Priorities Chair, for the Business school seat. Ochoa said, "Kanfer is one of the CC stalwarts. He's just basi- cally a big dude and to displace him is important." Kanfer will remain on the as- sembly as treasurer until next term, and Green indicated that Kan- fer might apply to replace Rep. Sandra Dixon who was removed due to excessive absences. Voters also approved the two referenda that were on the ballot by at least a 3-1 margin. The refer- enda will amend the MSA consti- tution to include automatic stu- dent group recognition and the in- stallation of the Environmental Issues Commission. In other elections, LSA Student Government President-elect Brett White indicated that the election might have to be reheld since the candidate who lost, Andrew Rus- sell, was omitted from Tuesday ballots. In addition, candidates Karen DeGannes, Roger De Roo, David Allison, and Michael Klein were elected to the Rackham Student Government.
