The Michigan Daily- Wednesday, November 20,1991 - Page 7 I Post office killer had threatened violence ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - Postal authorities ignored warnings Thomas McIlvane might strike out violently because of anger over his firing, months before he killed four co-workers and himself, officials said. Meanwhile, the third of his vic- tims was buried yesterday in subur- ban Detroit. A fourth funeral is set for Wednesday in Indiana. McIlvane, a fired letter carrier, went to the Royal Oak Post Office last Thursday and opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle. He killed five people, including himself, and wounded seven. The Detroit News said yesterday that McIlvane gave numerous indi- cations he was dangerous and once threatened to kill a state unem- ployment official after being denied jobless benefits. The Postal Service declined comment yesterday on the report. After his suspension for swear- ing at a supervisor last year, Mcdl- vane applied for benefits from the Michigan Employment Security Commission's Madison Heights branch, said Sgt. William Phillips of the Madison Heights police. The MESC denied McIlvane's claim, and he swore at two claims workers before leaving, Phillips said. He said McIlvane then tele- phoned MESC branch Manager Robert Leach. "I'm going to come in there and kill you," the sergeant quoted McIlvane as saying. Michigan National Guard avoids m * WASHINGTON (AP) - Michigan apparently would avoid major cutbacks in National Guard C strength next year under the 1992 defense bill, but its "Wolverine" combat brigade would remain on the chopping block, officials said yes- terday. After months of fierce lobbying, congressional committees voted to cut the number of National Guard and Reserve members by 37,508 un- der next year's budget, instead of the 105,076 the administration re- quested last spring. About 17,000 National Guard positions would be eliminated from the force of 457,000. The cuts would be spread across the country, but ajor Michigan's 12, would be affecte Gen.
