Page 10-The Michigan Daily- Tuesday, November 19,1991 'M' women runners receive national bid by Kimberl DeSempelaere Daily Sports Writer The women's cross country team has realized its season-long goal of making a fifth appearance at the NCAA National Cross Country Championship. The Wolverines compete for the national crown next Monday at the University of Arizona. After falling five points shy of second- place Iowa and an automatic qualifi- cation at last week's district meet, the Michigan team received notice today of their at-large placing. "We were very excited to receive the bid," redshirt frosh Jessica Kluge said. "Our goal all year has been to be ranked among the top 15 teams in the nation. To reach this goal, we had to go to nationals." Yesterday's practice was diffi- cult for the Wolverines, as they awaited word of their bid. "We just wanted to get through the practice," Kluge said. "All we thought about during practice was the phone call. I think we all ex- pected the bid after our performance during the season. We ran really well in a very tough district." Michigan coach Sue Foster has picked seven Michigan runners to compete in Tucson. The team will include seniors Megan Nortz and Carrie Yates, junior Amy Buchholz, sophomore Chris Szabo, and rookies Jessica Kluge, Kelly Chard, and Karen Harvey. Buchholz led the Michigan team at the NCAA District IV meet with an eighth-place showing. She has also placed in the top 10 at six of the team's seven regular-season meets. Chard was Michigan's third-best runner at the district meet, placing 16th, and finished in the top 10 at five meets this year. Szabo has placed in the top 10 at four regular season meets and placed 40th at districts. Yates and Nortz have been run- ning for three years and will pro- vide leadership for the Wolverines. Harvey and Kluge will round out the Wolverine contingent. They crossed the line at districts 11th and 77th, respectively. Michigan's strategy for success at nationals is summed up by Kluge: "We are going to have to beat every jersey in front of us, regardless of the team they are running for." VOLLEYBALL NOTEBOOK Athletic Department opens search for coach by Ken Davidoff and Jeff Williams Daily Sports Writers The Michigan volleyball team's match Nov. 30 against Iowa will end both the 1991 season and Peggy Bradley-Doppes' tenure as coach. The pro- cess is under way to fill the impending vacancy. Bradley-Doppes currently splits her time between her coaching role and her duties as Associate Athletic Director. She decided that after this season, she would concentrate solely on her administrative responsibilities. Bradley-Doppes, Athletic Director Jack Weidenbach, and Associate Athletic Directors Mike Stevenson, Bob DeCarolis and Fritz Seyferth will serve on a committee to find a replacement. Bradley-Doppes will recommend a number of candidates from a pool of applicants, after which the committee will name the new coach. "It's a very attractive job," Bradley-Doppes said. "It's a job people want to have. It's a real credit to our program and the girls." SCOUT'S HONOR, IT'S A RECORD: A new attendance record was set Friday night, as approximately 1,100 fans flooded Keen Arena to see the Wolverines take on Northwestern. A large reason for this was the presence of hundreds of Boy and Girl Scouts who took advantage of the Scout Night promotion. "This was a great crowd to play in front of," Bradley-Doppes said. "I remember last year my first match here where we counted 12 people who were not with us." The tykes' enthusiasm bolstered the spirits of the Michigan players, and they later bolstered the egos of the spikers by demanding autographs from them. IT'S BEEN SUCH A LONG TIME: The Wolverines' two victories over Northwestern this year marked the first Big Ten season sweep since they accomplished the feat over Michigan State in 1987. They have the op- portunity to do this against three of their final four opponents - at Pur- due and Illinois this weekend, and in the final match vs. Iowa. HIT 'N' KILL: Several players are among the creme de la creme of the conference statistical leaders. Hitter Fiona Davidson tops the Big Ten with a .327 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Michelle Horrigan upped her league-leading kill average to 4.15 kills per game over the weekend. ANI UN M.fl1UHU~flLuua Michelle Horrigan, the Wolverines' standout sophomore outside hitter, leads the Big Ten kills per game average. I READ THE DAILY CLASSIFIEDS " 01 Griddes!
