Page 10-The Michigan Daily- Thursday, November 14, 1991 Harriers hope to leave Indy with NCAA bid by Bruce Inosencio Daily Sports Writer As another chilly November weekend draws near, the Michigan men's cross country team hopes to heat up in Bloomington. Coach Ron Warhurst's squad looks to place high in this weekend's NCAA District IV meet. The Wolverines need .a strong race from the whole team in order to go to the national meet in Tus- con, Ariz. Michigan's top three harriers for Saturday's meet at Indiana University are senior tri-cap- tains Dan Oden, Tony Carna, and Matt Smith. Rounding out the top five for the Wolverines are sophomore Shawn MacKay and rookie Jim Finlayson. While the team has been running conserva- tively throughout the season, Warhurst seems to think that his squad will run with focus this weekend. "We're going to go out hard and go after it," Warhurst said, "but our main objective is to place in the top three this weekend so we get to nationals. It would be nice to win Saturday, but it's more important just to make it out of the district and into the nationals." Getting to nationals won't be easy for Michigan because NCAA District IV is one of the nation's strongest in terms of cross country talent. Boasting four of the nation's top-twenty teams, the district meet will feature Wisconsin (5), Michigan (7), Notre Dame (9), and Michi- gan State (17). "Wisconsin is a much better team than we thought originally," Warhurst said. "But I know that we can give them a good run for it." With more than 40 schools on hand this weekend, the meet is sure to be competitive. "We're looking for a very competitive race, but I think we'll do well because the course is 10,000 meters and that should help us a little," Warhurst said. Michigan's squad is more experi- enced with the longer distances, and the transi- tion from 8,000 to 10,000 meters will be to the Wolverines' advantage. All Big Ten schools - except Penn State who is not in the district, all Mid-American Conference schools, and numerous independent schools should provide Michigan with a tough race. Carna Women runners head to districts by Kim DeSempelaere Daily Sports Writer The Michigan women's cross country team races off to Bloom- ington this Saturday to compete in the NCAA District IV Champi- onships. The Wolverines hope t place in one of the top three spots which will enable them to advance to the NCAA National Champi- onship next week. Attending na- tionals has been the team's main goal all year. Approximately 20 teams from the Big Ten and the Mid-American Conference are competing at Satur- day's meet. Michigan has fared wel against other teams in the state, de- feating Central, Eastern, Western, and Michigan State earlier in the season. Michigan's main competi- tion at the meet will be Big Ten schools. The Wolverines have psyched themselves up for some tough com- petition during their two week break from meets. Last week, the team spent its practices working ore strength exercises. This week the runners ran shorter and faster races in practice to allow them time to rest before the meet Saturday. Over- all, the team has been fairly healthy with the exception of sophomore Jessica Kluge. "Kluge has been having some problems with her hip," coach Sue Foster said. "She seems to be recov- ering well, but we're unsure if sh* will be racing on Saturday." Michigan has already competed against nearly every school partici- pating at districts. Foster believes that this factor has allowed the Wolverines to learn the strengths and weaknesses of the teams. It is important for runners to know when to pick up the pace and when to stay with the pack. Michigan will most likely b, looking for junior Amy Buchholz, sophomore Chris Szabo, and rookies Kelly Chard and Karen Harvey to dominate the race. "Buchholz is a leader and has been looking great this season," Foster said. "Szabo always works hard in practice. She sets a great ex- ample for the rest of the team." Both Chard and Harvey have bee* welcome additions to the team. They have placed in the top ten at nearly every meet this season. "Harvey is really dedicated and always strives to be the best she can be," Foster said. "Kelly is a really great competitor. Put her in the competitive arena and watch out!" Other Michigan runners hoping to place high are seniors Megan Nortz and Carrie Yates.0 Buchholz sums up the team's at- titude: "We're going to nationals. We'll do anything to get there and when we do we will decide our goals."
