More than 400 wrestlers repre- senting 17 schools packed Bowen Field House for the all-day event. However, the day did not begin well for Michigan. While driving to Ypsilanti, three members of the team were involved in an accident when a 16-year old Ypsilanti man, driving on the wrong side of the road, totalled wrestler Lanny 7 Green's car. Teammates Steve Peacock and Phil Tomek were taken to the hospi- tal after suffering lacerations, and 'were unable to compete. Tomek was the top-seeded heavyweight at the open. Despite losing important wrestlers, Michigan coach Dale pfrwanet hta Bahr was pleased with his team's all-American Charlie Jones of Purdue. "Lanny had a rough day. He had to beat all-American Kevin Vogel (Central Michigan) to make it to the finals," Bahr said. Wolverine Jason Cluff deci- sioned fellow Michigan teammate Mike Mihalic, 5-4, to earn the 126 title. The 142 weight class featured another final between two Wolverines - Joey Gilbert and James Rawls. Gilbert decisioned Rawls, 6-4 in sudden death. "(Michigan wrestler) Mike Ellsworth also did very well by finishing fourth in 142, and winning seven of his nine matches," Bahr said. Also victorious for Michigan was sophomore Sean Bormet, who decisioned Tim Rohrig of Purdue, 4- 2, to capture the 158 weight class ti- tle. Michigan's Jesse Rawls was runner-up to Dave McKnight of Ferris State at 167. "Jesse is a freshman, so I was very impressed with his placing," Bahr said. Michigan's Matt Stout fought to an impressive victory in an early afternoon consolation match at 118. He scored three points in the final 10 seconds to come from behind and beat Frank Ingalls of Indiana. "I had wrestled him before, and had problems with his style," Stout said. "I wanted to get an escape to tie the score, which I was able to do." Then with less than five seconds, Stout did a double-leg takedown on Ingalls to emerge victorious, 6-4. Michigan swept its two games this past weekend. Stickers beat MSU Northern Illinois by Tim Spolar Daily Sports Writer The Michigan field hockey team closed its season by beating Michi- gan State and Northern Illinois in East Lansing last weekend. The vic- tories brought its record to the .500 mark for the season. Michigan began Friday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over the Spartans. Junior co-captain Katie Thomas and sophomore midfielder Lelli Hose each notched goals for Michigan, both of which resulted from penalty corner situations. MSU goaltender Sara Humpage stopped each initial free shot, but gave up a rebound which the Wolverines were able to put in the back of the net. The effectiveness of Michigan's penalty-corner play was a pleasant turnaround from previous games. "We were really successful with our corners this weekend," sopho- more midfielder Kalli Hose said. 0 "It was really nice (to improve), because we haven't been that suc- cessful in the past." The Wolverines were able to carry the momentum from Friday's game into their match against Northern Illinois, the season finale. The Huskies jumped out to a quick lead, but Michigan stormed back with three straight to put the game away. Thomas posted two of Michi- gan's goals, sandwiching Keely Libby's score, on which Thomas drew an assist. Overall, Thomas fin- ished the season with seven goals and 21 points, leading the Wolver- ines in both categories. "(Thomas) does really well against Northern Illinois," Kalli Hose said. "I don't know if it's that particular team, but she just seemed to be in the right place at the right time all game. You could rely on her to be there all weekend." Michigan displayed improved play all weekend, finding open play- ers and utilizing its team speed with accurate passes. "This weekend we started to pass a little better and we were putting the passes right onto each other's sticks," Kalli Hose said. "We were putting them exactly where we wanted them to go, and everyone was ready to receive the ball. We're a pretty fast team, and it made us seem even faster, because the ball was doing all the work and (play) was moving very fast." The Wolverines were also able to bounce back emotionally from their loss to Ohio State in the final home game of the season the previ- ous weekend. Michigan shook off the 3-2 overtime defeat to come out firing against the Spartans, where the Wolverines scored within the first five minutes of play. "The mental aspect was really positive, too," Kalli Hose said. "We were all pretty much up for the weekend, being our last weekend for this particular team. That's some- thing that we need to keep going next year, the attitude that we're going to do well and that we want it." The pair of victories brought Michigan's record to 9-9 overall, 4- 6 in the conference. More impor- tantly for the Wolverines, they were able to regain their confidence and end the season on a positive note. "It felt really, really good to finish with two wins," Kalli Hose said. "It's going to be great going into the winter season knowing that we came off two wins and that we didn't fall off at the end of the season. "It gives us a little more confi- dence going into our winter prac- tices, and when we start next year, we'll learn from this year and know that if something bad happens, we'll be able to bounce back from it." performance. Green, an all-American, was not seriously injured in the accident, and competed in the tough 177-pound weight class. He finished second to Tampa stuns Lions, 30-21 TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Vinny Testaverde played error-free foot- ball and Reggie Cobb pumped life into the NFL's 27th-ranked offense by rushing for a career-high 139 yards and three touchdowns yester- day, as the Buccaneers beat the Detroit Lions, 30-21. Tampa Bay forced four turnovers by Lions quarterback Erik Kramer and kept Barry Sanders from taking over the game when it looked as if Detroit might be able to come back from a 23-7 halftime deficit. Cobb, the first Tampa Bay run- ning back to rush for more than 100 yards since September 1990, scored on runs of one and three yards in the first half. He then devastated Detroit with a 59-yard TD burst that put the Bucs ahead, 30-14, late in the third quarter. Michigan's Jason Cluff, shown above at last year's Eastern Michigan Open, captured the 126-pound title yesterday in Ypsilanti. Yep, it's a big thought on everyone's mind.
