The Michigan Daily - Thursday, November 7, 1991 - Page 7 Workshop teaches women to fight *back against rape State high court to rule on abortion law by Julie Schupper Daily Women's Issues Reporter Leaders of last night's Sexual Assault and Prevention Workshop said 85 percent of women threatened with rape were able to escape if they yelled and resisted. The Jewish Feminist Group and the Feminist Women's Union spon- sored the forum in an attempt to promote wider usage of verbal and physical defense techniques. Orga- nizers said the workshop counter- acted the myth that rape is uncom- mon. Two martial arts specialists, Dori Mickelson and Debbie Webb, led the discussion at the Michigan League. "It is not necessary to have for- mal martial arts training to protect yourself from rape," Mickelson said. "Simple preventative measures as well as knowledge of self-de- fense techniques can increase your probability of safety." Some of the suggested preventa- tive measures included: walking during the night only in well-lit ar- eas; walking with confidence; carry- ing a whistle; trusting intuition; and varying walks home because Newsletters, Newsletters Newsletters Newsletters Big savings on newsletters for all clubs, businesses, and organizations. many rapes are premeditated. Facilitators discouraged alcohol or drug consumption, saying that it serves to place women at a disadvan- tage because it slows reaction time and inhibits intuition. Jenny Marx, an LSA senior and coordinator for the workshop, said that while the workshop did not guarantee participants would leave invincible, it did serve to enhance their confidence and ability to resist sexual assault. "We are hoping that the work- shop will empower women and give them the strength to realize that they are able to defend themselves," she said. "What we are hoping is that this workshop will help women to make conscious and well-informed choices, including doing what they can do within their lifestyle to min- imize the possibility of assault," Mickelson said. LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan pro-choice groups today will ask the state Supreme Court to find in the state constitution a right to abortion they fear may soon be. lost at the federal level. Activists on both sides of the abortion issue say the first abortion case to reach the high court since 1973 has implications far beyond the original issue - whether the state should pay for abortions for poor women. "This case involves more than Medicaid funds for abortions. This case will determine in many re- spects whether all Michigan women will have a right to choose an abor- tion," said Margy Long, public af- fairs coordinator for Planned Par- enthood Affiliates of Michigan. The attorney for Right to Life of Michigan said the case will set the boundaries for future abortion leg- islation. "I still think it's one of the most significant cases ever to be ad- dressed in this state by the Michigan Supreme Court," said John Curcio. Pro-choice advocates will ask the Supreme Court to go along with a lower court ruling released Feb. 20 that found a right to abortion in the state constitution. p Arrival AP PHOTO President Bush waves upon his arrival at Rome's Ciampino military airport last night.
