The Michigan Daily- Friday, November 1, 1991 -Page 11 Spikers hope to continue rocking as they hit the road Ken Davidoff i"' Daily Sports Writer When confronted with a prob- lem, there are usually two ways to approach it. Do you ask for financial aid, or do you drop out of school? Do you study for both tests on the same day so you do all right on both, or do you concentrate on one and blow off the other? Do you pop that zit, or do you Clearasil it to death? The Indiana and Ohio State vol- leyball teams encounter an ordeal of a similar nature this weekend when they take on the Michigan squad, led by star outside hitter Michelle Horrigan. How does a team neutral- ize Horrigan? This weekend's oppo- nents approach this matter differ- ently. "We have to accept that Horri- 'Ogan will get her kills, and we can't let her get to us," Ohio State assis- tant coach Steve Pickering said. "We have to make sure the other players don't hurt us." "We have to contain her," Indi- ana coach Tom Shoji said. "We can't let her get going; she's the type of player who can carry a team." Of course, the differing perspec- tives are partly attributable to the d~iiffering fortunes of the two squads. Ohio State (10-0 in the Big Ten, 17-3 overall) is enjoying an immensely successful season. With a starting squad of three se- niors and three first-year players, the Buckeyes have a healthy mix of youth and experience. Michigan coach Peggy Bradley-Doppes real- izes it will take a strong effort from her players to register a vic- tory. "We're going to have strong, ag- gressive serving, and we've been working on digging as well," she said. "If we have strong serving, they can't run our offense down our throats." Another factor in a potential Wolverine triumph is confidence. Hammertime! So, you've been keeping track of the Middle East Peace Conference and you think it's pretty boring. That's because you're only watching the daytime events. After dark, it's a whole different story. Just last night, before Bush and Gorbachev left, one of the delegates stood up and shouted "You may be leaving, but I'm Too Legit To Quit." All decorum was lost, and the world's leaders broke out in their best jivin' moves. You, too, can boogie like Gorby and the Boyz if you get your GRIDDES picks into 420 Maynard before 5 p.m. today. You'll be eligible for a $10 gift certificate to O'Sullivan's Eatery and Pub on South University. And you can't touch that. 1. Purdue at Michigan 8. Wisconsin at Illinois 15. Florida at Auburn 2. C Michigan's Fiona Davidson (2) plays the net against Illinois. The Wolverines travel to Indiana and Ohio State this weekend. "We think after the Illinois win (Illinois is second in the Big Ten), why can't we beat the No. 1 team?" Horrigan said. Before visiting Columbus Satur- day night, Michigan (6-4, 14-6) will take on the Hoosiers in Blooming- ton tonight. Indiana (3-7, 6-15) has had a rough time this year, and it was easily defeated when it visited Ann Arbor earlier this season. Coach Shoji feels a large part of his team's misfortune has to do with a lack of concentration. "At times we're right with a team, but then there'll be a four or five play swing when we look like we're not even there," he explained. In those spots, the other team has a distinct advantage, and then we can't catch up again. We've got to keep our intensity throughout the game." Despite the Hoosiers' shortcom- ings, Bradley-Doppes urges her play- ers not to take Indiana lightly. "We have to remember that they beat us twice last year," she said. After this weekend's contests, the Wolverines travel to East Lans- ing next Wednesday to take on Michigan State.
