Abortion groups say no blockade is

lp

by Karen Pier
Daily Staff Reporter
Although rumors have spread in
* the past week that a possible
blockade by Operation Rescue of a
Farmington Hills abortion clinic
might be in the works, both area
abortion rights and anti-abortion
activists have denied knowledge of
such a plan.
"We had a meeting on Tuesday,
and no one mentioned it," said LSA
senior Jonathan Payne, founder of
the Ann Arbor Committee to
Defend Abortion and Reproductive
Rights (AACDARR).

Christine Jones, a leader of the
Washtenaw County Operation
Rescue, and Sue Derengoski, the
chair of Students for Life, a campus
anti-abortion group, both said that
they were unaware of plans for the
blockade.
Some college students - and at
least a few from the University -
have assisted at clinic blockings.
Jones said she has been to about 15
or 20 clinic blockings.
One function of the AACDARR
is the defense of abortion clinics
from blockades by anti-abortion
groups.

A "clinic defense" begins when
AACDARR finds out where a
blockade is being planned.

AACDARR members are on
Operation Rescue's mailing list.
"We mobilize as many people as

Christine Jones, a leader of the Washtenaw
County Operation Rescue, and Sue
Derengoski, the chair of Students for Life, a
campus anti-abortion group, both said that
they were unaware of plans for the blockade

Operation Rescue to the clinic site.
Payne said that sometimes the
people who are to block the clinic
are not told where the clinic is and
must follow certain cars. "They're
very secretive," he said.
At the clinic, the strategy
depends on what Operation Rescue
members do and how many abortion
rights group members are present,
he said.
"If they're lying down, we pick
them up," Payne said. "If they
resist, sometimes shoving happens."
He said shoving is usually the
extent of physical violence, but

lanned
sometimes punches are thrown in
which case the police are involved.
Jones said generally when there
is violence, it is usually initiated by
the abortion rights activists.
"I've seen pro-lifers being
shoved by pro-abortionists," Jones
said.
Jones said that members of
Operation Rescue understand
violence will not be used, that
activists will sing and pray as they
block the entrances, and that
sidewalk counselors will explain
alternatives to abortion to pregnant
women.

Generally, the group gets this
information from the anti-abortion
groups themselves since

we can," Payne said.
