LW II looks to defend TM title by Kurt Luttermoser It's kickoff time once again - intramural football style, that is. Last Tuesday and Wednesday, over 300 fledging football teams flocked to the intramural sports building to sign up for the upcoming IM foot- ball season. These gridiron heros and hero- ines have been waiting for this mo- ment since the closing of last year's season. Pre-season games are already underway, mascots have been found, and yes, a coach has even been fired. Let's take a sneak peek at the respec- tive leagues and teams with a fore- cast of what lies ahead. Each team will play three games during the regular season. Play-offs begin immediately thereafter, with all teams being eligible regardless of record. All contests take place Sundays through Thursdays. Game times vary from 3 p.m. on Sundays to late night Thursdays at 10 p.m. Some of the best competition will be found in the Independent A division. Last year's powerhouse, Lethal Weapon II, is back with the same ammo. Weapon II is rated number one in Jim Sheists' monthly "Intramural Football: It's not just another game" manual. Sheists lists Weapon II's schedule and last year's draft as major reasons for LW II to be favored to take the title again. Other perennial favorites include Dr. Mob, The Morgue, and Big Bot- toms. Talk about mud flaps, Big Bottoms got 'em. This team will rely on its massive offensive line to open holes for its option running at- tack and, more importantly, control the time clock. Big Bottoms wide receiver Glenn Higgins, who led last year's Independent B league in touchdown receptions, is looking forward to the jump to A league status. "I'm really excited about play- ing in A this year," Higgins said, "and I'm hoping we get to the play- offs with a chance to meet Lethal Weapon II." Teams to keep an eye on in B league competition include the Peanuts Gang, Elmo Street Night- mares, and The Jerks. Co-Rec soft- ball champions, Rexa-Dog, are back looking for another piece of hard- ware to add their mantle shelf. In fraternity competition, Sigma Nu should again dominate the headlines.* So says prognosticator Sheists. Some rules to be aware of: Teams must have 5 players to start the game, 6 for Co-Rec. There will be no timeouts, unless called by the ref- eree for injuries or for T.V. pur- poses. Jerseys of contrasting colors must be wdrn by each team; plaid is forbidden. And lastly, teams may use their own ball on offense, being either of pebble-grained leather or rubber covered. Nerfs are not al- lowed. Game results will appear in next week's IM Beat. HOCKEY NIGHT IN ANN ARBOR- If wishing to engage in some ice-capades, hockey sign up deadline is Oct. 9.
