What a difference a year makes. Last weekend, the Wolverines went to Florida for four matches - three at the South Florida Vol- leyball Classic in Tampa, plus a dual match against Central Florida. They returned from the Sunshine State with three wins, losing only to Florida in the sec- ond match of the Classic. Not only did Michigan win, but it won impressively. The Wolver- ines did not drop a single game in beating South Florida, Toledo, and Central Florida. As a symbolic gesture of the program's new dedication to excel- lence, the players entered the seas- on with a new motto: "Michigan Volleyball: We Kill for It." That killer instinct showed August 30, as the Wolverines needed only 1:02 to dispense with USF in the season opener, 15-11, 15-4, 15-9. Sophomore middle blocker Michelle Horrigan led the charge with 12 kills, with junior setter Tarnisha Thompson adding 24 assists. Thompson is now fifth on Michigan's all-time assist list with 723, only 119 short of fourth. The next morning, Florida handed Michigan its first loss of Horrigan's 13 kills. Michigan bounced right back that evening, downing Toledo 15-1, 15-6, 15-12. The Wolverines bene- fitted from junior outside hitter Hayley Lorenzen's team-leading. nine kills and 13 more assists from Thompson. Horrigan, a Toledo na- tive, racked up eight more kills, and frosh middle blocker Aimee Smith added six of her own. "I thought we showed good in- tensity and hustle during the South Florida Volleyball Classic," Wolverine coach Peggy Bradley- Doppes said after the tournament. The Maize and Blue capped off the southern swing Monday with a hard-fought 15-3, 15-10, 15-3 vic- tory over UCF. Lorenzen had an- other big night at the net, killing nine over her Lady Knight oppo- nents, and Horrigan continued her storm at the net with eight more winners. Michigan heads south again next weekend, but this time the destina- tion is Texas. The Wolverines re- turn to action Sept. 13, facing DePaul in the first match of the Rice-Baden Showcase Tournament. ; . Student Seating Thompson the season. "I think this will increase stu- dent involvement," Fisher said. "I anticipate that this will have an impact on the crowd. Now we've got them there and involved." However, some student season ticket holders who have held their tickets for two or three years have expressed concern about losing their priority. "To say the least, I'm a little bit disappointed about it," LSA junior Jeff Cameron said. "I was going to have really good seats this year. Now the freshmen and new students will come in and have an equal opportunity to get the seats I would have. I have better things to do than show up two hours before a game." The application process that students go through to get seats has also been revamped. Beginning Oct. 14, season tickets will be sold for $65 to the first 4,000 students who apply. Students will be given a num- bered voucher when they apply. They will redeem the voucher dur- ing ticket distribution at the Ath- letic Ticket Office from Nov. 11 to Nov. 15. The Dec. 21 game against Rice is not included in the season ticket package. Individual tickets for that game will be sold at full price dur- ing the application period.
