The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, September 10, 1991 - Page 7 Lolla- *palooz me, baby by Kim Yaged If the '80s, with the rejuvenation of such rock oldies as Don Henley, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, were reminiscent of the 1960s, then the '90s, with the color of one's skin. This caused some fans to hoot in agreement, others to query, "What does Ice-T know about rock?" and still more to pon- der whether or not they brought along enough dope to get them through the rest of the afternoon and evening. The event? The first (and proba- bly only) Lollapalooza Festival. Lollapalooza has been variably in- terpreted as being: an Italian popsi- cle; a word meaning fantastic in some random foreign language; or, according to Webster, "something very striking or excellent." The show was organized by production manager Steve Payne, universally recognized backstage as an A-class prick. Perhaps coincidentally, the per- formance I attended at Lake Fairfax Park in Fairfax, Virginia (which was advertised as being in Washington, D.C. - yeah, right) took place on August 16th, exactly 22 years after the second day of Woodstock. People parked miles away from the park, as a six-mile- long line of cars stretched down the road. Lolla was a day-long fiesta consisting of nine hours of music and 12 and a half hours of fun... Well, yes and no. Frenzied fans started sprinting into the Park at 8:30 in the morning and spent the rest of the day waiting in line for food tickets, paying three dollars a bottle for warm Evian, and pretending to be worldly as they gorged falafel and other exotic foods they didn't recognize. When the water wasn't running out during the 100 degree day, people were be- ing sprayed by fire hoses. To the management's merit, despite the fact that loads of people were tripped out, there were no alcoholic Nails - noisy. Living Colour - better on the album, a let-down live, as usual. Siouxsie and the Banshees - boring. And Jane's Addiction the act that everyone was waiting for, but was much too tired to mosh it up once they hit the stage, de- serves more than a short phrase of depiction, but not much. The highlight of the show hap- pened when lead singer Perry Farrell bitched out his girlfriend At other performances, booths for Green- peace and other informative, if not iconoclastic, groups were set up instead of ~ the ones for food. And, oh yeah, there was music, sort of... beverages sold and, to to the man- agement's advantage, no outside food or drinks were allowed to be brought into the park. (At other performances, booths for Green- peace and other informative, if not iconoclastic, groups were set up instead of the ones for food.) And, oh yeah, there was music, sort of... The Henry Rollins Band- if you've never heard of them, you're lucky. Butthole Surfers - creativ- ity ended with the group's name. Ice-T - righteous rap. Nine Inch for being at Nordstrom's lifting ev- erything she could get her hands on instead of being at the show. This was the preface for a lame rendition of "Been Caught Stealing." "Stop!" was kick butt. Other than that, there is not much to be said. The Lollapalooza Festival will most likely end up being what Woodstock probably was origi- nally, a better experience than a show. And 20 years down the lihe, everyone will be saying that they were there. Ice-T, along with his thrash metal band, Body Count, was one of the many performers at that big concert with the really stupid name. reemergence of bell bottoms, side- burns, recessions and the dreaded "D" word - disco -seem to be destined to recap the '70s. Enter the Henry Rollins Band, Butthole Surfers, Ice-T, Nine Inch Nails, Living Colour, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Jane's Addiction, in that order. Sounds like the guest list for a radical, anti-establishment, how-to- be-politically-correct rally. Indeed, Ice-T took a moment to preach about rock music not centering on the CLASSIFIED ADS E NT SEEKING AGGRESSIVE CAMPUS SALES REP. to market custom sportswear, glassware and other items to fraternities, sororities and other campus organizations.
