CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Two years ago, Michigan rented a pep band for the NCAA basketball tournament rather than send the real Wolverines to Atlanta. Michigan went on to win the NCAA Championship. In what could have been an at- tempt to recreate history, Michigan called upon high school volunteer cheerleaders to fill in for its gen- uine squad during Saturday's Michi- gan-Boston College game. Newton North High School's cheerleaders accepted the invitation extended by Larry Schmeidler, president of the General Boston Alumni Chapter. "We looked at the profile of Newton North, and it fit the Michigan profile with respect to academics and athletics," Schmei- dler said. "We're proud to be associ- ated with Newton North." The Wolverine cheerleaders were not surprised about missing the trip. Aside from the annual bowl excur- sion, the group only makes short road trips. Thus when Michigan coach Annette Schmidt heard Wednesday night that she could take four cheerleaders to Boston, every- one was appropriately surprised. "Our expectations were not to come," Wolverine cheerleader Josh Newman said. "I was shocked." The funds were supplied by the Michigan Alumni Association, which decided sponsoring the trip was worth the investment. "We have a lot of pride," Schmeidler said. "We felt we had to put on a first class show." And instead of one set of cheer- leaders, Michigan ended up with Michigan Daily Athlete-of-the-Week WHO: Desmond Howard TEAM: Football HOMETOWN: Cleveland YEAR: Junior WHY: Howard sparked Michigan in its season opener by scoring Michigan's first four touchdowns, including a 93-yard kickoff return to open the second half and give the Wolverines the lead for good. Howard also caught seven passes for 86 yards including" touchdowns of 19, 8, and 19 yards respectively. BACKGROUND: Playboy magazine 1991 Preseason All-America ... "We didn't realize it was such a big deal until I heard it on ESPN," Wolverine cheerleader Stephanie Huff said. The 10-member high school squad spent the days prior to the @ game learning "Hail to the Vic- tors" and other traditional cheers from their Wolverine counterparts while converting its "Tiger" cheers to "Wolverine." We're proud to be associated with Newton North' -Larry Schmeidler, President, General Boston Alumni Chapter* "They made us feel at home - everybody organizing the whole thing, except for BC," Newton co- captain Vicki Lucente said, referring to statements by Eagle sophomore running back Joe DeNucci. He com- plained about his high school alma mater cheering for Michigan and against Boston College. While the national media has pointed to the situation's negative aspects, Schmeidler looks to the positive. "We're trying to turn this around for the plight of the high school," he said. "Michigan is an educator. That's our job. We reached out for the kids. The purpose is to help them and say thanks to Newton North." "Win-In-An-Instant7' with P ilot...
