S wo At 6-foot-4, with 255 pounds of muscle seem- ingly carved out of stone, Michi- gan defensive Evans is one of those guys who can send chills down the spine of everyone around him. Yet Evans' mouth rarely moves; he lets his steely eyes do much of the talking. Most of the time his stare says, "What the hell are you looking at?" In his rookie season, Evans was practicing with New York Giants fullback Jarrod Bunch, then a fellow frosh. Bunch, only slightly Evans plays v smaller than Evans, had his same mannerisms. Inevitably, people compared the two, a comparison to which" Evans took offense. "I don't look like nobody," he would insist to anyone who brought up the subject. One day, Bunch glanced over and sized up his counterpart. "We were looking at each Defensive tackle Mi!ke Evans has yet to meet a ch all1enge he cant overcome by Theodore Cox "Bunch was looking at it as 'You'll get your chance, too, I'll get to see what you can do. Can you hit me?"' But all Evans knew was that Bunch was looking at him funny. So he threw down his helmet and got ready to fight. Bunch just laughed at the uptight newcomer. Since then, the two have become friends. When Bunch signed his contract with the Giants in July, Evans was one of the first people he called. "It's funny now because I respect him," Evans said. "He's a guy with a good level head." The 1987 incident left Evans with a reputation of arrogance. "I was no smiles. Everyone thought I had a chip on my shoulder," Evans said. "It wasn't that I had a chip on my shoulder, it was just that I had nothing to smile about." Certainly today no one would describe Evans' demeanor as chipper, but his arrogance is now regarded as confidence. "You're not going to knock him off the ball," Michigan defensive line coach Tom Reed said. "He's the strongest man we have on the defensive team, maybe the strongest man on the whole team, leverage-wise." At one time, the Michigan coaches labeled Evans' side of the line the "weak side." It was a title he never minded. The more teams ran at him, the more tackles he could make; last season, he made 46 of them, the third-highest Wolverine total. He also tied for the Big Ten lead in sacks with seven. Because of Evans' improve- ment since his first year, Michigan has no weak side on the defensive line this year. Evans now plays with the experience of 18 straight starts. "He has worked extremely hard to put himself in position to do some outstanding things," Michigan coach Gary Moeller said. Evans' past explains a lot about his tough, often stubborn exterior. Evans' climb began in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he was born. When he was 11, his parents separated and his mother moved to Boston with her children.
