S1 11 1A* S*Vllll Imagine how former Michigan coach and future television commentator Bo Schembechler will react when he sees Michigan quarterback Elvis Grbac set up in shotgun formation. Maybe ABC should use a five- second delay. "We've been working out of it a little," Grbac said. "Mo (Michi- gan coach Gary Moeller) wants to get away from conservative Grbac is back, leads Blue attack running," "You've got to stay up with .football today," Moeller said. "We have more receivers now than in the past. We could potentially shotgun. It's not big in my plans, however. When it's third-and- nine, you're just moving him back there. It's not to be fancy. It may be the best way to execute that play." Whether in or out of the shotgun, Grbac will start at quarterback for the second straight season. With the return of receiv- ers Desmond Howard and Derrick Alexander, Grbac has the opportu- nity to rack up some staggering numbers., Grbac's stats from last year shouldn't be overlooked either. He set a single-season Michigan CABLE TV... THE SELECTION IS YOURS! record with 21 touchdown passes, while throwing for 1,911 yards and connecting 58.3 percent of the time. He also posted a touchdown- to-interception ratio of 3.4. "Realistically, we should expect him to be as good a quarterback as there is in the Big Ten," Moeller said. "I think he'll be better as a quarterback. You've got to make sure that he tries to get a little bit better, not a whole lot better. Otherwise, you start trying to do things that you shouldn't be doing." The 6-foot-5, 228-pounder added 10 pounds to his frame during the offseason. He did suffer from a broken thumb in the spring intra-squad game, but it shouldn't present any problems now. "Elvis is a good kid," Moeller said. "He works hard. He does the things to try to develop himself to be a good quarterback. He's a good conditioner. He runs and lifts weights. Those kinds of things prove the kid has a good attitude." "He's probably the smartest player on the field," Howard said. "He watches more film than anybody else." And yet it is the mental part of. the game that worries Elvis the most "You can gpt conditioned most during the summer, but when it comes down to the Ohio State game, the Illinois game, when you go out to the Rose Bowl, it's really mental," he said. "If we can get over the mental part of it, we'll have a good season. "As a young player, I think anybody like that doesn't want to make a really big mistake," he added. "But now, I think once you get confidence in the offense, and with the offensive line that we have, I think I can make a couple more plays on my own and use my athletic ability." Backing up Grbac will be Todd Collins and then Ken Sollom. 4 F a ALL FOR ONLY... $17.50!
