The Michigan Daily-Thursday, September 5, 1991 - Page 9 Assembly slashes per term fee by Christine Kloostra Daily Staff Reporter Students may be worried about informing their parents of the new tuition increases, but they will be able to tell them the student fee for the Michigan Student Assembly has gone down by 5C cents. The University Board of Regents unanimously supported a proposal to reduce the fee - which funds the assembly, Student Legal Services (SLS), and the Ann Arbor Tenants Union (AATU) - from $6.77 to $6.27. "This has been an extraordinary group of young people who have looked hard at the needs of the stu- dent body," said Regent Deane Baker (R-Ann Arbor), adding that he be- lieves the assembly represents a strong level of support from stu- dents on campus for the first time in many years. The fee decrease was requested by MSA's executive officers, members of the Conservative Coalition, pri- marily because the loan MSA took out to cover a $60,000 deficit two years ago has been paid. The student fee had been $6.27 prior to the loan. "We are very pleased that the re- gents saw fit to pass what we pro- posed," MSA President James Green said. The decrease will result in a 49.34 percent reduction in AATU's budget. AATU lobbies on behalf of tenants, provides counseling to stu- dents with landlord problems, and publishes information on tenant is- sues such as subletting, and tenants' rights. Cutback supporters claim that the tenants' union does not keep ac- curate financial records and does not devote adequate time to student counseling. "It's clear AATU is not spend- ing student money responsibly," MSA Rep. Jeff Muir said. Amy Polk, an MSA Rep. and a former volunteer at AATU, ex- plained that the time spent outside 'This has been an extraordinary group of young people who have looked hard at the needs of the student body' - Regent Deane Baker of counseling is devoted to training, creating handbooks, and working for state and local legislation to pro- tect tenants. Opponents of the proposal be- lieve the reduction will severely harm AATU and the services it of- fers to students. "The tenants' union is one of the positive lights... it reflects back pos- itively on the University," said Bob Gillette, director of Southeastern Legal Services. AATU offers 20 hours of open counseling per week as well as by appointment. Last year the union's budget was $48,484 -85 percent of which paid the salaries of AATU's two full-time and five work-study employees. The new budget reduces the personnel funding in half. The budget will also reduce the funding for Student Legal Services by 3.31 percent and for the assembly The assembly's budget includes a $5,000 increase to student groups and a full-time bookkeeper to over- see MSA, SLS and the tenants' union. This position was mandated by the regents following an audit of MSA. m * x a .. g 4 I Petition drive AP Photo Leaders of the campaign to recall Gov.
