Indiana When Anthony Thompson finished his career two seasons ago, he took most of the Indiana offense and its record book with him. But Vaughn Dunbar exploded onto the scene last year, rushing for 1,224 yards. Coach Bill Mallory expects even bigger things from Dunbar this year. And with 18 starters returning, the 1991 Hoosiers should improve on last season's 6- 5-1 overall record (3-4-1 in the Big Ten). "We've got one of the top running backs in the country in Vaughn Dunbar," Mallory said. "Vaughn really came on last year and I know he's focused in to have a great year this year. There's no reason why there can't be a fine running offense." A solid offensive line provides the key to any rushing attack, and the Hoosiers' blockers should give Dunbar plenty of holes.. Senior tackle Randy Schneider anchors a line that averages over 280 lbs., and has all five linemen returning. Indiana's question mark offensively will be its passing game. Quarterback Trent Green must prove his three-touchdown performance in the Peach Bowl was no fluke, but rather a sign of good things to come. "We're real pleased with the way Trent Green performed in the Bowl game against Auburn. He took that same attitude and improvement into spring," OMINO'S PIZZA SAYS GO BLUE! BEAT BOSTON COLLEGE! While the offense returns its best players, the defense will be looking to replace its team MVP, free safety Mike Dumas. That task belongs to redshirt frosh Lance Brown. But surrounding Brown are a solid secondary and an experienced front seven, led by second team all-Big Ten linebacker Mark Hagen. "For us to be a really good football team, our defense has to jump to another plateau and I think it's very capable," Mallory said. - Phil Green Iowa Iowa won't have the advantage of sneaking up on the Big Ten this year as in 1990. With 14 starters returning, everyone knows the Hawkeyes are in good position to make a repeat trip to the Rose Bowl. "I anticipate another good defense and when we have a good defense we normally have a team that winds up in a bowl game," Iowa coach Hayden Fry said. "We have good players back on offense and should move the football." The biggest advantage for Iowa (6-2 in the Big Ten, 8-4 overall in 1990) might not be the players, but rather the schedule. Fry, the dean of Big Ten coaches, needed to upset Michigan State, Michigan and Illinois all on the road last year. But this fall, the Hawkeyes don't have to face Michigan State. In addition, Michigan and Illinois will travel to Iowa City. Then there is the pre-Big Ten season, featuring games against such cupcakes as Hawaii, Iowa State and Northern Illinois. Michigan is the Hawkeyes' first Big Ten opponent, and the Wolverines must play current Michigan Even if Michigan State doesn't settle on a quarterback, the Spartans (6-2 in the Big Ten, 8-3-1 overall) will finish near the top of the Big Ten. To begin with, the Spartans' roster contains two of the most explosive offensive players in the country, tailback Tico Duckett and wide receiver Courtney Hawkins. Both are prominent candidates for the Heisman Trophy. Duckett is the nation's leading returning rusher, after compiling 1,394 yards in 1990. Only a junior, he runs the 40 yard dash in 4.29 seconds. "He's the type of guy that you're never really going to get a clean hit on him," Michigan State defensive end Bill Johnson said. Iowa's offensive firepower against Michigan and the rest of the Big Ten will depend heavily on the arm of quarterback Matt Rodgers. The senior will start for the third straight year and will be able to choose from a solid receiving core of Dana Hughes, Jon Filloon and Jeff Antilla. The weakest part of the Iowa offense will be at running back. Nick Bell and Tony Stewart, who combined for 1,853 yards in 1990, have departed. "This is our most questionable position," Fry said. "Can Mike Saunders and Marvin Lampkin run inside effectively? It's important that we have another strong running game to complement our passing attack." Iowa's defense will be strongest at defensive end where Leroy Smith and Moses Santos will return. John Derby will lead the linebackers. The defensive backfield will sorely miss All- American cornerback Merton Hanks, but Eddie Polly;Scott Plate and Carlos James should prove more than adequate. - Theodore Cox State Y 11 ITS TIME FOR DOMINO'S PIZZA." ft to junior Burnie Legette. Though not nearly as big a as Bunch, he s a good blocker and a A: solid runner. SHe gained 126 yards last season, including 54 yards in the Gator Bowl. "I just want to play the role of my position," Legette said. "I think I'm going to carry the ball a couple more times than Jarrod did. And I think I'll probably be more of a threat as a receiver." But after Powers and Legette come the question marks. he .~ ~ remaining backs com- bined for 43 FILE PHOTO/Daily yards on 13 higan's rushing carries last season. Thus, if rookies seek playing time, the backfield is the place to look. "I'm worried about who's going to run with the football," Michi- gan coach Gary Moeller said. "I think you need more than one back. You never know when a guy's going to get banged up." Tuesday, Moeller said true frosh Tyrone Wheatley will see substantial playing time by backing up Powers. He also said that the 6-foot-1, 215 pound rookie is at the same level Powers was at this time last year. "They all have to play some- time," Moeller said. "He catches on pretty well for a freshman. He hasn't fumbled the ball much and I like that." In addition to football, Wheatley captured several Michigan state high school track titles this spring and sprints the 40-yard dash in 4.,3 seconds. Redshirt frosh Jesse Johnson should back up Wheatley. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds and has great acceleration. 1 1985 Best in Ann Arbor 1986-Best in Ann Arbor* 1987-Best in Ann Arbor 1988-Best in Ann Arbor* 1989-Best in Ann Arbor * "Wheatley's got the most chance of playing as a freshman," Moeller said. Hawkins also makes tacklers squirm. Last season, his 474 yards were a dropoff from 1989, when he racked up 1,080 yards. However, he still posts an average of 17.1 yards per catch. With the loss of Dan Enos, the Spartans could be weak at quarterback. Bret Johnson is the number one candidate for the job, but there will also be some competition from Jim Miller, Mill Coleman, and John Gieselman. Michigan State coach George Perles said he would not announce the starter until Monday. The strong defensive tradition that Perles brought with him from his days at the Pittsburgh See MSU, Page 21 Powers will carry the bulk of Mic workload. As in years past, new faces should emerge at Michigan's iunning back position. With Jon Vaughn's and Jarrod Bunch's departure to the NFL, this season's backfield lacks experi- ence. Sophomore Ricky Powers is the tailback. He gained 748 yards on the ground last season as a true frosh backing up Vaughn. Only Rick Leach in 1975 and Jamie Morris in 1984 have equaled Powers' feat of rushing for more than 500 yards in his first year.
