This year, he's striving for immortality. Anderson is entering his senior season as the leading tackler in each of his first three seasons, making him the first Wolverine in history to lead the team in tackling for three consecutive years. Michigan coach Gary Moeller is counting on the first-team all- Big Ten linebacker to lead the defense, despite a sidelining injury last spring. "Erick's been out of football since last fall," Moeller said. "He missed spring practice with a shoulder injury, but that shoulder seems to be in much better shape now than it was most of last season. He has got to be a domi- nating linebacker for us." Anderson, the defensive captain, will be the key to what Moeller anticipates will be a more aggressive defense. "I want the tackling to be sharper, more people to the ball and that kind of thing," Moeller said. "We didn't tackle well last year, particularly early in the season." , To get more people to the ball, MIoeller may blitz the opposition more frequently, a risky plan that could help his young secondary by pressuring the quarterback more. However, the Wolverine coach is quick to caution against being overly reckless. "We've got to eliminate our mistakes," he said. "When you get guys who are more comfortable and you eliminate mistakes, you're more free-wheeling. It's like with anything else, if you can attack something and you feel more comfortable, then you can really by Matt Rennie get after it. If you're feeling your way through it, then you're wondering 'Do I do this or do I do that?"' Anderson will have to assume a leadership role, with an inexperi- enced counterpart at inside linebacker. Sophomore Steve Morrison will likely be the starter, and fellow sophomore Nate Holdren will also see action. An injury to junior Dave Dobreff dealt a serious blow to the depth at the inside slots. Dobreff, who would have played exten- sively as Morrison's backup, tore cartilage in his knee during fall practice and will be sidelined for at least three more weeks. The Wolverines may find more stability than in the past at outside linebacker, where Neil Simpson and Martin Davis return. Matt Dyson has also been impressive - early and may warrant playing time. "We'll have a little more maturity there," Moeller said. "We have never really settled on anybody at that position in the 1991 Big Te Rule Changes: 1.
