His lineup was a group of 14 players that resembled a jigsaw puzzle. Demetrius Calip and Eric Riley were the corners - the pieces Fisher al- ready knew where to place. Eventually, Fisher discovered how Michael Talley interlocked with the rest of the puzzle. But now, five games into the season, the picture behind all of the trial-and-error arranging has emerged. Last night, Fisher found the picture beneath all the confusion. He solved the puzzle by adding the final two pieces: Kirk Taylor and Sam Mitchell. They received their first starts of the season over Tony Tolbert and Chris Seter, respectively. Michigan thrashed Boston, 90-68. Now Fisher has switched employers, from Milton Bradley to Dow. The Wolverines exhibited a team chemistry on both offense and defense that propelled them to a landslide victory. It's the chemistry the team has been searching for, the one Michigan has spotted from a distance, but never quite harnessed. Until now. Taylor posted 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Did someone say three-guard? The 6-foot-four junior has shown he can play in the backcourt or the frontcourt, at Crisler or Cameron, against zone or man-to-man. When he plays the frontcourt, the "small" in small forward is stressed. So we'll call him a quick forward, with the accent in the same place. Taylor is so much more valuable to the team as a starter than as a sixth man - even if he plays the same number of total minutes. He attacks the opposing team with intense defense, and dictates the aggressive tempo of Michigan's play that Tolbert simply doesn't initiate. Mitchell used to play the perimeter, but he has proven he can work in- side as well. Initially, Fisher started Seter because of the way he comple- mented Riley in the middle. Mitchell has achieved that and more. Taylor found superlatives for Michigan's new team chemistry inside and outside. "The chemistry is perfect. You could just feel it out there." That total team chemistry appeared on the statistic sheet as well. The Wolverines recorded 21 assists - they had six against Duke - and illus- trated an unselfishness that had been rare in previous games. Granted, the assist total was bound to increase in Michigan's first game agtinst a zone defense. But the new attitude also showed on fast breaks. With 6:01 remaining in the first half, Calip fed Sam Mitchell in the low post. Mitchell touched the ball to Taylor for a dazzling layup, upping the Wolverine lead to 36-15. Two passes inside the paint? Fans probably had to look at their ticket stubs to make sure they were in Crisler watching the same Michigan squad. Give Fisher credit. He didn't even have a boxtop to look at. by Theodore Cox Daily Basketball Writer Last Saturday, Duke taught Michigan a few lessons. Last night, the Wolverines showed that they're good students bynteaching the same lessons to Boston University in the 90-68 rout at Crisler Arena. Lesson number one: Hang on to the ball. Michigan had only two turnovers in the first half. It was the first game Michigan has kept their giveaway total under twenty. Lesson number two: Set the tone of the game. The student who gets an A+ here is guard Kirk Taylor. In his first start of the year, he put the Wolverines on top first by nailing an eight-footer from the top of the key. He didn't slow down a bit, offensively or defen- sively. "The difference was, it was the same thing as in the Duke game, they came out and they (Duke) were the aggressor," Taylor said. "They made us react to them. Therefore, we turned the ball over. See, that's what we did to them (Boston). We were the aggressor. We made them react to us, and we put pressure on them." Lesson number three: Defense is the best offense. Michigan coach Steve Fisher went with a more defensive line-up, start- ing Taylor and Sam Mitchell in replace of forwards Tony Tolbert and Chris Seter. The Wolverines pressed Boston and used the man-to-man defense to hold the Terriers to 32 percent shooting for the first half and only 26 points. "As long as we do it the way we did it tonight, our defense will work against anyone," Mitchell said. Lesson number four- Put two solid halves together. In the past, Michigan has developed a habit of building a big lead, only to see it evaporate in the second half. Against Duke it was just the opposite, the Wolverines played poorly in the first half and then came back in the final minutes. "We tried to do the opposite, and today we did just that." To open the second stanza, the Michigan starters jumped all over the Terriers once again to push the lead up to 31 points. This allowed Fisher to give significant minutes to first-year players Rich "Kid 'N' Play" McIver and Jason Bossard. Each saw action for thirteen minutes. McIver was strong underneath the boards, grabbing six rebounds, and playing solid defense. But, to the disappointment of the crowd, he missed two dunks. For the first one, he was only a foot from the bucket, but when he went up with the ball, he slammed it into the rim. "I thought I had it when I went up," McIver said. "I guess the rim just told me I can't have it. I do it everyday. I guess I was too eager. I wanted to dunk for the first time in a game. But not tonight." Captain Demetrius Calip was also impressive with his outsidgr shooting. He nailed five three pointers, giving him a game-high " nineteen points. - Michigan took 24 three-pointers in the game, since the the Terrier played a zone defense. It was the first time the Wolverines had faced the ; zone all year. Class dismissed. 3-pt goals: 8-24(Calip 5-11, Bossard 1-1, Pelinka 1-3, Tolbert 1-5, Taylor 0-2.
