The Wolverine hockey team proved its ability to
throw a game's momentum its way was not just a one-
time fluke of the 8-6 comeback victory over Boston
University two weekends ago.
The icers pulled out two tough victories over West-
ern Michigan last weekend, both of which verified the
fact that Michigan is a team with the ability to fight
their way into the win column.
Friday night at Lawson Ice Arena, the Wolverines,
went into the third period tied, 2-2, against the Broncos.
Even with the foreign crowd screaming against them,
the squad managed to conjure up the needed vitality.
"We were kind of hanging on there for a while and
then we decided we better start playing," senior Don
Stone said. "That's when we started taking over."
"The third period was a good solid period," coach
Red Berenson said. "It was a matter of momentum. We
wanted to win and we knew what we had to do and we
did it."
The Wolverines rode that momentum to tally their
four ensuing goals and shut out Western for the remain-
der of the game. The Wolverine surge commenced with
rookie leftwinger Cam Stewart's playbook goal five
minutes into the period.
"Stewart's goal was really the turning point in the
game," Berenson said. "It broke the tie and started
things going in our favor."
On that score, Stewart got the assist from co-captain
Stone, who assisted in a big way at Yost Saturday by
pushing Wolverine play in the winning direction.
Michigan again went into a period with the score tied,
only this time it was the second. It was midway into
the period when Stone's goal switched the thrust of the
action the Wolverine way.
"We were getting to a point there where it was get-

Icers ride 'mo'
toward victories
ting kind of close, 1-1," Stone said. "I think my first
goal broke the ice a little bit for us and we kind of got
going from there."
Even after Stone had set Michigan in forward motion
and they had widened the gap to 5-1, the Broncos gave
the Wolverines a scare that might have disheartened
many lesser teams, but the squad proved their true abil-
ity to keep their head in the game.
Western posted three goals within four minutes in
the third period and appeared to be ready to snatch the
game away from Michigan. But the Wolverines an-
swered by grabbing the momentum back through tena-
cious defense, making the Broncos' third goal their last.
More than often, a victory depends not only on tal-
ent, but on the way the momentum is flowing. The
Wolverines have always had the talent. Now it's clear
they have the ability to control that flow.
The victories over Western Michigan last week-
end moved the Michigan hockey team into sole position
of second place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Asso-
ciation, but it also lowered them in another category.
The Wolverines had posted a 34 percent power play
conversion rate (34-for-99) coming into the series, a
high in the CCHA.
Yet, out of a total of 17 power play opportunities
this past weekend, Michigan was only capable of con-
verting on four, 2-for-8 Friday and 2-for-9 Saturday.
Those statistics place the team more than 10 percent be-
low their season average.
"Two out of eight, two out of nine isn't bad statisti-
cally," Berenson explained. "Last year we would have
been happy with it. Not this year."
Denny Felsner's 25-game scoring streak ended
Friday night. However, the sophomore forward resumed
his scoring ways Saturday night with two goals and one
assist.

Michigan defender Mark Sorensen fights with a Western Michigan player toward the end of the second period
in the Wolverines' 7-4 victory Saturday night. Saturday's triumph gave the Wolverines a sweep of their
weekend series with the Broncos.

assistant coach Mel Pearson took a
blow to the forehead as Western de-
fender Brent Brekke came crashing
into the Michigan bench. Pearson
had to ice the wound but was fine af-
ter the game.
The Broncos drew first blood
Saturday, scoring only 18 seconds
into the first period. Michigan came
back two minutes later on a goal by
Neaton.
The second period belonged to
the Wolverines, specifically to the
Stone brothers. Don Stone scored at
11:04 and first-year forward Mike
Stone chipped in his second of the
weekend two minutes later.
Junior right winger Denny Fel-
sner, who went scoreless Friday,
added the fourth Michigan goal,
putting him back atop the CCHA
scoring race.
After a quick goal by Don Stone
in the opening minutes of the third
period, the momentum took a huge
turn in favor of the Broncos. Trail-
ing, 5-1, Western started to shoot
back into the game.
Bronco center Scott Garrow
scored a shorthanded goal at 3:50
and junior left winger Keith Jones
scored three minutes later. Western
pulled within one goal after senior
center Mike Eastwood chipped one
in at 7:42. By this time, the small

contingent of Western fans hail
completely shut down the wave that
had been rolling through Yost.
"We had a couple of costly erroj
in the third," Neaton said. "After
was 5-3, we knew we had to turn it
around. We were really getting o
ourselves."
. Michigan put the game away in
the last minute on a goal by Felsnr,
Don Stone squeaked in his hat trick
less than ten seconds later and
Michigan finished on top by three.
"Once you get two goals you re,-
ally want that third one," Stone sa id
"I was looking for the opportunity
(to score again) and I found it."
