Page 10-The Michigan Daily -Friday, December 7, 1990 DUKE Continued from page 1 the Hoyas. "I mean, there were guys getting carried out of that game towards the end Like Michigan, Duke has fielded a three-guard offense. However, Krzyzewski will start a new lineup for tomorrow's game, which features center Christian Laettner, forwards Crawford Palmer and Grant Hill, and guards Billy McCaffrey and Bobby Hurley. The Blue Devils (5-2) play man- to-man defense and Gaudet, who scouted the Wolverines in their vic- tory over Central Michigan, expects Michigan to do the same, and several key matchups might ensue. The place to watch will be un- derneath the basket, where Michigan center Eric Riley and Laettner will do battle. In the past, Chris Seter and Sam Mitchell have shared time defending the opponent's best big man, but Gaudet asserted that Laet- tner is a strong enough player to draw Riley on defense. Such a matchup could put Riley in foul trouble, a situation the 6- foot-II sophomore has not yet been in this season. Fisher has recognized the need for Riley to play as close to 40 minutes as possible, but against Laettner, Gaudet is skeptical Riley can do it. "We're going to play a physical style, taking it inside. I know Laet- tner himself can't go the whole game," Gaudet said. "Somewhere, Riley will have to rest, whether it's on offense or defense." In last year's game, Riley notched a key block against Laettner, and sprung Rumeal Robinson on a fastbreak that put Michigan up, 105- 101, in overtime. Another pivotal matchup pits point guard Michael Talley against Hurley. Talley has excelled of late for the Wolverines, but he has yet to face an opponent of Hurley's caliber. Duke's 6-foot sophomore earned All- ACC honors his first year and posted 19 points and six assists in last year's game. Blue wrestlers host three-way matter by Eric Sklar Daily Sports Writer " KE.NNETH SMOLLERUaniy Michigan guard Michael Talley takes on Duke's Bobby Hurley in last year's Michigan's 113-108 overtime victory at Crisler Arena. They will face one another tomorrow in Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. CELEBRATE THE SEASON WITH A LITTLE Hill, the Blue Devils' 6-foot-7 rookie swingman, will draw Tony Tolbert on defense. The three-slot is a perpetual concern for the Wolv- erines, because they must usually defend a forward with a guard. But Gaudet regards third guard Tolbert differently than his official listing. "We would consider Tolbert a forward," he said. "All those guards are all a little smaller, but they're very good one-on-one players." Tomorrow afternoon, just one week after competing in what Michigan coach Dale Bahr calls "the toughest tournament except the Big Tens and the NCAAs" - the Las Vegas Classic - the Wolverine wrestling team opens its regular sea- son. Despite the fatigue factor from last week's tournament, Bahr is con- fident about the challenge of facing three teams in one day. "The wrestlers normally take a break after Las Vegas, but this week we've had intense practices," Bahr said. He added that the team is train- ing this way to simulate what the NCAA tournament in March will be like. The three teams visiting Cliff Keen Arena are Eastern Michigan, Ferris State, and Toledo, and Bahr expects nothing short of a sweep. "We're a very well balanced team," Bahr said. "It's like, we're Michigan, and when we face teams like Eastern, Ferris State, and Tol- edo, we expect to win." Hr vever, while the Wolverines' three opponents may not be syn- onymous with wrestling power- houses, two of the schools, Toledo and EMU, sent individuals to the NCAA tournament last year. "Toledo has a couple of real of standing kids," Bahr noted. W. One of Toledo's best is Jade Mountrie, who will face Wolverine Joey Gilbert. Mountrie won the 134- pound weight division at the Ohio Open, and enters with a perfect, 15- 0, record. However, Gilbert is coming off a second-place finish in Las Vegas. Toledo heavyweight Brian Wal- czak, at 12-3, will provide a ch4 lenge for Wolverine Phil Tomek, who placed eighth in Las Vegas. The top wrestlers for EMU are Tony Venturini (118), whose record is 18-5, and Chris Parent (150), at 11-6. Venturini lost to Wolverine Salem Yaffai last week in Las Vegas, as Yaffai took fourth place. "They're competitive between the 118 to 134 weight classes," Bah said. "But up and down their lineup I don't know if they can go with us." Ferris State's best wrestlers are Gary Hoppes (150, 8-5), and John Zuccala (118, 6-4). "They've got some good kids. They've beaten Michigan State in the past. Every once in a while they'll come up and nip a Big Ten school," Bahr said. "We want to out there and kick some butt. That the way the kids feel."
