The Wolverines (3-2) jumped out to an early, 7-0, lead, but everything was downhill from there. Sluggish play and a strident Central defense paralyzed Michigan all evening. "The early lead was deceiving," Michigan coach Bud VanDeWege said. "It was a real sleepy start. Both teams were playing very tentatively" At halftime, the 26-25 score was deceptively close and Michigan was lucky to be behind by only one point considering the lackadaisical Chippewa play. "Our defense sets the tempo for us and we were playing reaction de- fense in the first half," Davenport said. "We finally got the defense go- ing in the first half, but it took awhile for our offense to catch up with us." Once the Central defense tight- ened, the result was disastrous for the Wolverines. Carla Sterk once again proved to be the Chippewas' defensive stopper, forcing bad shots and numerous Michigan turnovers. The sophomore forward also hustled at the other end of the court as she tallied 17 points. The backcourt defensive play of the Chippewas was the key to their success. "If you can play good back- court defense then that takes away 15 seconds of the 30 (seconds) that they have to score," Davenport said. The Chippewas only improved when they came out for the final twenty minutes. Senior forward Sue Nissen grabbed 7 rebounds and ended up with 18 points, shooting almost 62 percent from the floor. Sophomore standout Trish An- drew notched a career-high 22 points, almost half of the Wolverine's out- put. Among her many admirers was Davenport.. "She was more than we could handle. She has a real nice shot from 15 feet," Davenport said. "The only person I have that could get a hand in her face was my freshman." Exhausted from her 36 minutes of banging underneath the boards, Andrew complimented her team- mates for feeding her the ball. "We have plays that incorporate a down- screen that leaves me open in my spot," Andrew said. "They just hit me when I was open." VanDeWege recognized his team's lack of scoring diversity, re- sulting in a dependence on Andrew as its sole provider. "Trish had to shoulder too much of the offense," he commented. "I just couldn't let her come out since she scored darn-near half of our points." Carol Szczechowski's turnover late in the game iced the game for the Chippewas. With 2:07 left, Szczechowski brought the ball up- court only to throw it away to where she thought her point guard was. Although it was too late at this time to cut the Chippewas' 12-point lead, the turnover symbolized Mich- igan's play throughout the game.
