At GILT FREE' EXTREMITIES Continued from page 5 corner away from her roommate's accusatory stares. She is pragmatic as a result of her desperation. Bedwell, while masterfully de- picting Raul's manipulative behav- ior, serves as a transparent vehicle for Inman's attempt to spur contro- versy with sympathy for a mentally ill criminal. Bedwell vacillates be- tween uncontrolled anger and pa- thetic whining. His performance, be- cause it is so overdone, only en- hances Raul's cruelty, rather than trying to make the character of the rapist a subtle reality. Perhaps Inman's understanding of the play's "meaning" would have come through more if he had thought less about the unreasonable- ness of Marjorie's reaction, and more about the falsity in the depiction of a rapist as an out and out psychotic. EXTREMITIES will be performed at East Quad's Halfway Inn tonight and tomorrow night at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Facilitators from SAPAC will hold discussion after- ward. Admission is $3. The Gories House Rockin' Wanghead (With Lips) It's been a while since Len Puch and his Wanghead label have released one of their hep documents of De- troit's excellent garage-rockabilly scene, from which Elvis Hitler is probably the most well-known act. House Rockin' is a flawless slab of vinyl showing off the talents of the Gories, a trio from Detroit. Wanghead records are usually minimalist rock jam sessions, and this one is no different. The Gories ain't no bombastic power trio; the instruments here are one harmonica, one rhythm guitar, one rippin' lead guitar and a simple drum kit. And that's all they need; the bass-less ap- proach A la Pussy Galore sounds as potent as the Thunderbird E.S.Q. the band thanks for their inspiration. Another important feature is their technique in the studio: overdubs are right out. "If you can't do it live, then don't do it in the studio," they write in the liner notes. But hey, let's not forget the screamin' lead vocals. If Howlin' Wolf sang lead in front of Bo Did- dley you might have heard the high energy the Gories have captured here. And do you think Jon Bon Jovi, David Coverdale, Bret Michaels, Vince Neil, Mark Slaughter, the Face in Warrant, Kip Winger or anyone else outside of the Cynic's lead wailer could let out a scream as powerful as Gories vocalist Mick (just Mick) does? Hell no, they couldn't. -Brian Jarvinen The NatIual Route for Optimal Health (313)666-76" -f Challenging Summer Internships in Jewish Community Service Needed: Chicago area undergraduates 'with an interest in Community Organi- zation.
