Loy Vaught played basketball at Michigan because it was the only big school that recruited' him. He played in the shadow of Terry Mills, the Wolverines' prized recruit. But this is not your average story of an instant millionaire engaging in a life of hedonism. Vaught always conducted himself with class, and he continues to do so after signing a four-year, $4.1 million dollar contract with the Clippers. He did not relate his new lifestyle with arrogance and pretense. Instead, he spoke like a wide-eyed kid who got rewarded for his hard work. "All my years I thought I was relatively unknown," Vaught explained. "Going to the draft in New York in itself was a big thrill. Then when I got drafted, it was pure happiness." Vaught has averaged eight points in 20 minutes per game as a forward for a Los Angeles club that is flooded with superb college talent, but has yet to crack the group of elite Western teams. "To play in May - that's our slogan," Vaught said. "We have the personnel, so we just have to put ou- nose to the grinds -one and work hard." But whether the Clippers contend for the NBA title or remain in the Western cellar, Vaught will enjoy his new job. "Okay, there are 24 hours in a day," Vaught explained excitedly. "A practice or a game takes about two hours. That gives you 22 hours every day to do whatever you want. "The job itself is pretty easy," Vaught added. "I'm just thrilled to be where I am." It's a safe bet to say that a lot of people are thrilled for him as well. Since the moment the Milwaukee Bucks drafted him with the 16th pick overall, Terry Mills has been the subject of trade talks. Even now, as the NBA season is underway, Mills remains at his Romulus, Mich., home talking with the Denver Nuggets about his future in basketball. Milwaukee sent Mills to the Nuggets immediately after the draft, in return for Danny Schayes. Denver reportedly offered Mills $600,000 per year, a figure Mills rejected. Instead, the 6-foot-10 forward opted to sign a two-year, $2.4 million contract with the Paouk Mills million contract with the Paouk I 1 r t 2 s s a e a r c limelight, Vaught should establish himself in a city where the limelight shines the brightest - Los Angeles. Vaught elevated his game ad infinitum at Michigan, and now it seems that as the thirteenth pick overall by the Clippers, he has elevated his social status as well. He lives in a waterfront condominium in Marina Del Rev and frequents the L.A. club scene with Eddie Murphy and Mickey Rourke. Noted Clipper fan Arsenio Hall is also included among Vaught's new friends, and he may soon interview Vaught on And plenty of other places, too.
