LSA junior Jesse Walker and LSA senior Steve Koppelman, who were both on the speakers list for the public session and are candidates for the Michigan Student Assembly, said they were denied entrance to Crisler Arena. Both added that University offi- cials made no effort to advise them of the change in location. A janitor in the Anderson Room told them the meeting had been switched to Crisler Arena, they said. University officials said signs were posted in the windows of the Fleming Building announcing the change. No signs were posted at the An- derson room. "Maybe next month I will put my tuition money in an undisclosed room and let the regents look for it until I tell them where it is," Walker said. Ann Arbor resident Bryan Ander- son said he also was denied entrance to Crisler Arena and threatened to pursue legal action. "As a constituent of Deane Baker I should have the right to talk to him and air my views," said Ander- son. The Open Meetings Act of Michigan states: "All meetings of a public body shall be open to the public and shall be held in a place available to the general public." A public body is defined as "any state or local legislative body; in- cluding a board, commission, com- mittee..." The Board of Regents is a public body. The state's Open Meetings Act requires that in regards to public meetings, a "public notice for a pub- lic body shall always be posted at its' principal office and any other loca- tions considered appropriate by the body." Power said students on the speak- ers list had been notified of the meet- ing's location change but was unsure of what method had been used to no- tify them. "We wanted to make sure that the invited students on the speakers list got their chance to talk," Power said.' Students protesting outside the News and Information Services Building reacted with little surprise to the meeting's change of location. "It's a classical regental move," said Rackham Graduate student Laura Dresser. "They don't have any ac- countability to students - their ac- tions are taken without any regard to what students want or need." "It was a really low thing to do' - regents are supposed to be here for students, but they don't listen," said LSA junior Cindy Landrum. t SL N DAY DOUBLE FEATURE O it. Upgrade your Claris Software!
