December qualifying meet q by Jeff Lieberman Daily Sports Writer Two years ago, former Michigan fencing club president Philip Issa competed in the Junior Olympics at Colorado Springs. This year, he is passing along his experiences to help four teammates achieve that same feat. "Phil went to. the Junior Olympics a few years ago," current team president Sarah Hipp said. "He said that if the competition at his qualifying event is the same, then I'll probably get a chance.". "When I went, I told a few more people about it, and there's been a lot more interest in it recently," Issa said. Hipp, along with Bonny Chen, Eric McAlpine, and Jeff White will all compete in the Junior Olympics' qualifying tournament in December. The ensuing olympics will be held in February in Little Rock, Arkansas. Issa, who is no longer eligible to compete, is the only member of the team to have gone to the Junior Olympics, which takes a certain number of competitors from each state. When he competed two years ago, the event was at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. "It wasn't one of my best days fencing, but in the end I finished around 90 out of 180," Issa said. Issa pointed out the many obsta- cles and difficulties of competing in such a large event, obstacles that may hurt an athlete's chances of do- ing well. "It .was probably one of my first tournaments of that size," he said. "I was kind of lost in the beginning. But, in general, when you're at a fencing tournament, they end up be- ing like most fencing tournaments." As a member of a non-varsity Michigan squad, Issa didn't have the luxury to bring a coach with him to the tournament. He had to fund the trip himself and couldn't afford to bring his parents along with him. In addition to competing, Issa had the added burden of making his own living and travel arrangements. "I was alone there," Issa said. "I knew absolutely nobody. I really didn't have that many chances to meet that many people." However, other fencers at the event faced similar problems. "In my first round of competi- tion, there was a guy there who ended up placing second in the whole tournament," Issa recalled. "The very first bout I fenced was against him and he had the chicken pox at the time."~ He also remembers the trouble he and others ran into just arriving at the academy to compete. "The night before it was really foggy," he remembered. "The taxi I took to get to the Air Force Academy got lost since it was so foggy. I almost missed registering for the tournament." Issa knows from experience that competing at this event is not an easy task. Hopefully, he can pass on some of his experiences to those members who wish to go to this year's Junior Olympics. All of the fencers, he feels, have more than practical shots at qualify- ing for the event. And they too feel that if all goes well, they could get a shot to compete. "I have probably a 50-50 chance," Hipp said. "It could be a little more depending on how much training I can get in before then and how good the competition is there." FILE PHOTO/llyH Current Michigan fencing team president Sarah Hipp, in the foreground;~ takes the offensive in a competition last year. This year she hopes to do the same in the Junior Olympic's qualifying tournament. Both Chen and White have also shown a lot of potential since be- ginning fencing a year ago. "A lot of it depends on who de- cides to go to the qualifying events. The field of competition on that day is a large part of your chances," Issa said. "It depends on the person and how they're feeling that day," Hipp added. If all four do happen to qualify it will not only be a great accom- plishment for the team, but it will also help them to do better at Litg~e Rock. "If two or three of them qualify it will be a lot better because they could travel together," Issa said. "They'll be able to watch out for each other. They'll just have lessti worry about." And hopefully these fencers can pass along their experiences to the next group. Y 0 Cpt(N11tCCHA Scorecard Standings TEAM (OVERALL) Rec. Pts. GF GA I GA 1. Michigan (7-2-1) Lake Superior (8-1-1) 3.
