WHY: The Wolverine kicker booted five field goals without a
miss in Michigan's 22-17 win over Illinois on
Saturday. The three-pointers were of 18, 28, 51, 18,
and 19 yards. The 51-yarder is the longest of his
career. Carlson tied the Wolverines record for most-
field goals in a game when he hit his fifth one in the*
fourth quarter.
BACKGROUND: 1990- Is 36 of 36 on PATs... has made
62 straight PATs, last miss was against Iowa, Oct.
21, 1989... is 13 of 20 on field goals for the
season... 1989- was near-perfect in field goals
(13-14) and ranked as Michigan's leading scorer (76
points).., second-team All-America selection by The
Football News... 1989 AP and UPI All-Big Ten first
team... honored as Sports Illustrated's Offensive
Player-of-the-Week for his performance versus'C
UCLA in 1989, when he kicked four field goals,
including the game-winner with one second. left...
successfully kicked an on-side kick with 1:33 left to
set up the game-winning drive versus UCLA... set
Michigan record for total field goal yardage in one
game (149 yards vs. UCLA in 1989)... has twice
kicked six PATs in a game, against Minnesota and
Purdue, in 1989... 1988- saw action in the
Wisconsin game and kicked an extra point against9
the Badgers.
