Ice hockey vs. Michigan State Tonight 7:30 p.m. Yost Ice Arena _,SPORTS Friday, November 9, 1990 Volleyball vs. Minnesota Tonight, 7:30 p.m. at Minneapolis, MN *The Michigan Daily Page 9 GOPHERS COULD BE 2ND STRAIGHT 'M' VICTIM Spikers set for upset by David Schecter Daily Sports Writer If it's fixed, don't break it. Last week, Michigan volleyball coach Peggy Bradley-Doppes finally found a combination of starters that yielded a win, and she doesn't plan on tampering with success this weekend against Iowa and Min- nesota. "We're going to stay with the ex- act same defense and the exact same starting lineup," said Bradley- Doppes. The starters practiced to- gether all this week strengthening their play and team chemistry. Tonight's opponent, Minnesota, has been struggling recently. "They're struggling at a level like we are, and I would say that their program has been certainly more successful than ours. With Min- nesota we're going to try to be very, very aggressive and go after them," said Bradley-Doppes. Tomorrow's opponent, Iowa, has been on something of an athletic roller coaster. The Hawkeyes are a traditionally strong team led this year by setter Jenny Moylan. The Wolverines will try to run their of- fense away from Moylan so she will not have an opportunity to dig all the balls. Between Minnesota and Iowa, Bradley-Doppes likes the Wolver- ines' chances of winning over the Golden Gophers. "We're looking at both teams thinking 'Hey, we just beat Illinois,"' she said. "They have something to be afraid of, we don't." Last weekend the Wolverines up- set nationally-ranked Illinois. For the team it was a David and Goliath type win, and it gave Michigan con- fidence. However they can't be too confident. The Wolverines aren't the only team to chip away at the Big Ten favorites. Two weeks ago Iowa defeated the Fighting Illini 3-2. The shock waves of the Michigan upset are still reverberating through the volleyball community. "I've been getting calls all week. It's been great for the girls," said Bradley- Doppes. Some might think that victory was a fluke, but Michigan outplayed Illinois defensively, and put together a better team perfor- mance. This weekend the Wolverines get their chance to prove their doubters wrong. The Wolverines' bowl bid is out of the hands of Michigan wide receiver Desmond Howard. Crunch Major bowl hopes hinge on by Ryan Schreiber Daily Football Writer From showdown to letdown. Having originally, been billed as the war for the Big Ten title, Michigan's contest against Illinois on Saturday has been reduced to a battle for a respectable bowl. Add a 54-28 Fighting Illini loss to Iowa to two Michigan conference losses and the result is a non-televised game played for pride and a possible New Year's Day bowl bid. Yet, the 105,000-plus fans in attendance will certainly get what they pay for. Illinois and Michigan have two of the top receiving corps in the nation, let alone the Big Ten. And don't expect either team to keep from airing out the ball. "We're going to have to throw the ball a little," Illinois coach John Mackovic said. "To control the ball, we're going to have to throw a little. We're not going to just run on them." Illinois quarterback Jason Verduzco has been no slouch in his first year at the helm, completing a higher percentage of passes (.640) than any other first- year Illini passer. His 13 touchdown strikes on the season also ranks him second on the all- time Illinois list for first-year quarterbacks, only one score behind Tony Eason. His primary target thus far has been senior Shawn Wax, who has caught five touchdown passes this year (including an Illinois single- game record three last weekend against Iowa). "Shawn's fast, he's a kid that can leap, and he's one of those guys that wants the football," Michigan coach Gary Moeller said. "He's just an excellent receiver." r 0 im Big Ten clash Mackovic expects similar results from the Michigan offense, led by the Desmond Howard- Derrick Alexander tandem at wideout. "They'll be among the best receiving units in the Big Ten and maybe anywhere," Mackovic said. Michigan will see another advantage if the Illini exhibit the same defensive weaknesses evident in last week's loss to Iowa. The Hawkeyes rushed through, over and around the Illini defense for 335 yards, boring huge holes in the Illini defense. Said Moeller, "I think they just missed a couple of key tackles and got out of position. I still think they have a very good defense." The Illini have nine returning starters from last season, including Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy finalist Moe Gardner at nose tackle.
