Page 12-The Michigan Daily- Friday, November 2,1990 r . . .. PURDUE Continued from page 1 Purdue's hopes rest in the arm of the "great athlete," quarterback Eric Hunter. Last year, after most of the crowd had left Michigan Stadium, Hunter razzled and dazzled the Michigan defense in a 42-27 de- feat. Hunter threw for 344 yards, as Purdue scored 20 fourth quarter points. "This guy is such a great ath- lete he can cause problems and if they play a good defensive game, you could be in for a long after- noon," Moeller said. Michigan will then counter with the best defense: long offen- sive drives. "I'd like to take the ball and keep it away from them," Mo added. After sitting out a week be- cause of a slightly separated shoulder, Hunter came off the bench last Saturday against Michigan State in the second half to complete 18 of 28 passes for 231 yards. two touchdowns, and two interceptions. On the year, Hunter has thrown for 1,376 yards. "It looks like Eric Hunter has regained his rhythm with accurate passing and being alert," Akers said. "When he's on like that, we can put points on the board. We have something to look forward to." What exactly does he do? "He goes against all the principles of football and is successful," Moeller said. Hunter is known for rolling out, running some, stop- ping, and then heaving the ball across the grain to the other side of the field. With such an electric spark, Michigan does not want to get in a scoring game that would make Paul Westhead's Denver Nuggets or old Loyola Marymount team proud. Moeller equated Purdue's offense as the equivalent of the Run and Shoot. The problem is, while Hunter may provide the Shoot, no one has provided the Run. The Boil- ermakers are averaging an anemic 1.6 yards per carry on the ground. Their top ground gainer, Anthony Vinson, only has 198 rushing yards on the season. Jon Vaughn leads the Wolverines with 1,011. With inside linebacker and co- captain John Milligan returning to the lineup after being sidelined with a broken foot, Michigan's de- fense is finally regaining its old personnel. But beware: as the defense fat- tens up, Hunter will try to cook the Wolverines' goose. A A JOSE JUARE VLanly Michigan safety Tripp Welborne returns a long punt in the Wolverines' 45-19 rout of Indiana last Saturday. Welborne leads an inspired defense into West Lafayette to face Purdue tomorrow afternoon. Our coaches believe grass is easier on the players, that they can recover from injuries much faster." Weidenbach was quick to point out that there is conflicting evi- dence regarding which surface is safer. Pending the approval of the Regents, Michigan will become the third Big Ten school in the last two years to revert to natural grass. Iowa and Ohio State have recently made the change, and both schools installed the Prescription Athletic Turf. The system has also been implemented in Soldier Field, the home stadium of the Chicago Bears. Weidenbach said that no other forms of natural turf were consid- ered. "This is the system with the track record," he said. "We wouldn't want to take a chance on another system." Additional renovations to the stadium were also discussed at the meeting. Repairs to the east side of the stadium are at the forefront of the plans, which are far from their final stage. The east side consists of suspended concrete slab, which Weidenbach likened to that of a parking structure. Al- though there are are no current structural problems, the slabs are due to be replaced by 1993. GEORGE BENSON- I Big Boss Bond Nil( t , a- is B rz BOBBY LYLE- hN TheJourney IAtlontic LAIL I.R.
