Sugar molds in the shape of skulls, a bottle of Soho soda, and a letter addressed to "Grandma Carmien" are a few of the items that have transformed the American Culture Office into a shrine for the dead. Yesterday and today are, accord- ing to Mexican tradition, designated the "Days of the Dead" - a time to honor one's deceased friends and rel- atives. In recognition of the tradition, Prof. Sandra Cisneros' American Culture class, which explores is- sues related to women of Mexican ancestry, has constructed an altar and placed on it items to remember their friends and relatives. "The custom dates back to pre- Columbian times and was all but abandoned on this side of the border until contemporary Chicano artists reclaimed the image of the dead as a way to convey ideas," Cisneros said. In Mexico, altars are dedicated in homes and cemeteries, and might include photos of the deceased, per- sonal items, religious icons, or fa- vorite foods. Though the Days of the Dead celebration occurs shortly after Hal- loween, the festivities do not carry- the gruesome tone that the Ameri- can holiday does. "The Days of the Dead is almost a play and acknowledgement of death..." Cisneros explained. "It's different than the American con- text." "The students' response has been really positive," said Linda Eggert, administrative assistant for the Pro- gram of American Culture. "They think it's nice to have something tangible like this that brings the culture to life, as opposed to just RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS .-1 JODI MILLMAN/Dail Students in the American Culture class erected an altar honoring the "Day of the Dead", a traditional Mexican holiday. Instead of being built by a fam- ily, "the altar was a collective effort of the class," she added. CASH IN ON GOOD GRADES. Shereen Rothman, a Rackham graduate student in environmental education, urged students to extend their education beyond the class- room. "It is easy to recycle a few cans and be done with it," Romero said. Displays on topics such as inte- grated waste management illustrated current dangers to the environment. Through songs, cheers, speakers and a skit, Unity Day organizers en- couraged the campus to take a more active role in the preservation of the planet. "We are trying to create an open forum, an atmosphere in which any- one can show up and take action," said LSA senior Elissa Kirby, a member of Recycle U-M. One student used the occasion to orient himself to the environmental community at the University. "I'm trying to get a feel for which environmentalist group I want to join," said LSA sophomore Matt LeSag. Many students said they would do more to recycle but wished recycling facilities were more readily available. "Of course it is up to the individ. ual. But the campus could makeit easier for everyone to get involved, not just those who are already con- sciously aware of the importance of recycling," said LSA sophomore Melanie Hatz. The University is in the process of designing and implementing; a program that would make recycling easier for students, said Buck Marks, the University Recycle Coordinator* Marks said his office is working with a grant that will affect 50 cain- pus buildings. In addition to the recyling bias and awareness programs already imp- plemented in the residence halls, Marks said the University-wide pro- gram will provide recycling contain- ers at every staff desk and recycling bins in areas such as Angell Hall. "Ultimately, there should be bins for recycling in every hallway that is accessible to students," he said. for innovation, efficiency and proven effectiveness. For 22 years, Judge Pieter G. V.
