But things do get a little hectic at times, and the longer you wait, the worse it gets. So if' contestants will just form a single-file line - especially during rush hours like the one in the picture - things will run a lot more smoothly. We thank you. Turn in your picks to the Student Publications Building, 420 Maynard for your chance to win a $12 gift certificate to O'Sullivan's Eatery and Pub. And remember to fill out the tiebreaker! ACADEMIC YEAR: First-year student ELIGIBILITY: First-year ANN ARBOR (AP) - Bennie Oosterbaan, a three-sports varsity star and the last University of Michigan football coach to win a national championship, was known for a quiet, yet powerful, manner that brought out the best in his players. Oosterbaan died Thursday night in an Ann Arbor nursing home. He was 84. "Bennie Oosterbaan, probably as much as anyone, typifies the great tradition of Michigan athletics, as a player, as a coach, as a gentleman and a very bright guy," said Bo Schembechler, former Michigan coach and now president of the Detroit Tigers. In the 1920s, Oosterbaan lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He led the Big Ten in touchdowns in 1925 with eight. He was an All- American in basketball in 1928, and also that year topped the Big Ten in hitting in baseball, said Michigan spokesman John Hamel. Big Ten spokesman Mark Rudner saidFriday he couldn't confirm that because' records aren't kept past 1947. Schembechler said Friday he first encountered an Oosterbaan team when he was an assistant at Northwestern, and confident of an easy win. But Oosterbaan came up with a series of offensive plays off the single wing, "and he just absolutely drubbed us. We had no idea how to get him stopped." "He was very close to his players," he said. "They revered him, because they knew he was a quality guy. have never heard anyone say a bad word about Bennie Oosterbaan." Oosterbaan became an assistant coach in 1928 and head coach in 1948, winning the national championship his first year at the helm. During his 11 years as head coach, Michigan won three Big Ten championships and a Rose Bow victory in - 1951 by defeating California, 14-6. He compiled a 66- 33-4 record. Oosterbaan, born in Muskegon in 1906, was director of athletic alumni relations until he retired in 1972. "Bennie Oosterbaan is a Michigan tradition," said Ron Kramer of Fenton, who played for Oosterbaan before a successful car % with the Green Bay Packers of th~w NFL. "The man gave his whole life to Michigan."a Kramer said Oosterbaan didn't recruit players; he felt that if they wanted to play for the Wolverines they would attend Michigan. WHY: Shields filled the void in goal for the Wolverines this weekend, playing all ninety minutes and posting two wins against Illinois-Chicago, 9-2 and 5-1. Goaltending has been the only major weak spot thus far for the Wolverines who now sit atop the CCHA with a 5-1 record. Shields was nearly perfect Saturday night, allowing only one deflected shot to score and making several spectacular saves. Friday, he notched 28 saves and held the Flames scoreless until the high-powered Wolverine offense was able to turn it on.
